Bantwal: Man who went for wash before prayers drowns in Netravati

Bantwal, Oct 2: A labourer who went for a wash in the Netravati river Wednesday October 2 died after he slipped and got washed away by the currents.

The deceased has been identified as Abubakker Siddique (32), a resident of Guruvayankere, Beltangady.

He was working on the construction of a compound wall near tourist guest house here.

At around 1 pm, Abubakker headed for the nearby mosque to offer prayers, and went to the river to wash himself first.

However, he accidentally slipped and fell into the river and was at once pulled away by the currents.

The others workers who were at the spot as well as locals rushed to his rescue, but he could not be located. The fire brigade was also informed.

Though the fire service is located at a very short distance from the spot of the tragedy, the locals said that the fire personnel arrived an hour after being informed. Angered by the delay, the people began a flash protest against the fire personnel.

By evening, with the help of the fire personnel and local swimmers, Siddique's body was recovered at a spot a little away from where he fell.

Bantwal town police has registered a case.
