Karkala, Oct 5: A car fell into a roadside ditch on Saturday October 5 near town municipal council office here, allegedly due to gross negligence by the authorities in failing to take precautionary measures while undertaking drainage work.

Not only did the car get stuck in the ditch, but another car which was behind dashed against it and remained stuck there.

The workers who started drainage work on a manhole on September 28 here, had dug the road 24 ft deep but failed to take precautionary measures to warn commuters.

The accident threw traffic in disarray for about half an hour.

There are complaints that the accident occurred due to the negligence of the municipality, despite a report warning of adverse consequences published in a newspaper.  Business is more here on Saturdays and there are banks in the area.  The traffic has increased.  The authorities concerned have not converted the road into one way or assigned a traffic constable to regulate traffic, complain the locals.

This is a negligence from the driver not Municipality. Look at the first and last photograph. There is sufficient space to pass the vehicle and I don’t understand why the car driver went on manhole? Secondly Municipality covered the drainage and not kept open so why unnecessarily to blame municipality? The concrete slabs laid on the drainage is to pass the pedestrians not the cars. Every piece of slab has the maximum weight bearing capacity. I must say Municipality should impose hefty penalty to the car driver for drivers negligence and demolishing public property.

There is no point in blaming anyone. Driver of car, if he is good experienced driver, should have knowledge whether his car can pass that narrow strip. Knowing that it cannot, he still took chance and now blaming everyone.

First we have to admit our fault.

Road contractors have to put up signs much before the work place to caution ROAD WORK IN PROGRESS.

Even if this is put up, 2 wheelers will object and they will somehow sneak into that forbidden area and will drive through.

So much for our road contractors, public and municipality.

Municipality & Corporation negligence is so much in our Udupi & DK districts, that if all the affected vehicle owners start claiming compensation in Court for the damages, then all these Municipalities-Corporation will go Bankrupt within no time.

This incident happened due to Contractor cum Municipality negligence. Contractor should have barricaded the area with signs or municipality directed the contractor to do so. However both failed. Poor car owner have sort the problem by insurance or through insurance if can. In Indian constitution there is no law to sue the Municipality nor the contractor....? I live in UK and if there is hole on the road, and my vehicle gets damaged, the municipality/ council pays for the damage. Which is why the municipality/council takes care of damaged roads to avoid millions in damage to the vehicle owners. The court law sees that the compensation is granted to the vehicle owner.

    This is India...

Every Indian citizen are eligible to better life, but most of the income goes in corruption, and even though they know about it turn a blind eye. In western countries tax is collected from the rich and distributed to the poor. So that even the beggar is looked after. In Gulf countries they don't have natural resources/wealth like India, like gold, iron etc. but just oil and still able to look after its citizens with facilities. In India we have all the resources like gold, iron etc. but most of it swallowed by the greedy politicians and the bureaucracy.

Munciplity along with drainage board and police are responsible for the negligence. most of the time there is no coordination between the various departments, that's the main problem we are facing everywhere.
