Beltangady: Protest against gas pipeline - Angry locals stop survey officers

Daijiworld Media Network – Beltangady (NM)

Beltangady, Oct 6: The Pilikala villagers on Saturday October 5 expressed strong opposition to the proposed HPCL gas pipeline between Mangalore and Bangalore and stopped the special land acquisition officers who reached the village with police security to survey the region.

The villagers including women stopped the officers despite several attempts by them to convince the locals. The officers left the scene soon after.

"This is the agriculture land we have looked after for decades with our hard work. No one can ask us to leave the land," said the locals. When the police said that they were here with the permission of the DC, an angry local retorted, "The DC did not work in this agriculture land." There were a heated arguments between the two groups.

According to the reports, the pumping station for the proposed HPCL gas pipeline project will be set up in seven acres of Pilikala village. The central government through a gazette has already directed the authorities to acquire the land; however, the villagers have been firm on their stand. “We will not give up the fertile land at any cost. For this we are ready for any fight,” were the words of protest that echoed on Saturday.

The region is lush with paddy fields and areca trees. If the construction of proposed project comes up, it will stop the flow of water from one field to the other, they say.

Beltangady probationary DySP Sajith VJ spoke to the villagers and assured them that without their permission their lands will not be taken away. The angry villagers even took their ire on mediapersons who were present.

The officers however did not comment on the compensation to be given to those who would lose their lands. At least seven acres of land has been earmarked for the construction of pump house to lay the pipeline. The pipeline will pass through at least 12 villages in Beltangady taluk.

Although, the land has not been acquired for the laying of gas pipeline, large iron pipes required for at least 100 km have been kept at Nidigal, Ujire. The equipment for the construction too have been brought to Ujire. This has irked the villagers even more.

Officers including R Venkatesh, Gangadhar, HPCL officer Yuvaraj, SI Prakash Devadiga, Neriya gram panchyat president Kusumavati and others were present.

Gas distribution lines (to households) are usually laid under/along the roads with seperate manholes for them with clear markings. It operates exactly as how sewer operates, with special valves in place for safety.

Gas delivery lines between towns/ cities are usually run on the same pattern or above ground which can be easily accessible in emergencies, but in modern days, comes with a huge security risk/costs, hence it is better under roads which comes with extra cost of resurfacing the road, but with lesser cost due to savings in land acquisitions.

Deliveries for storage come usually by sea but Bangalore having no such access, it has to be delivered by pipeline.

Knowing through news in near past, even our old water pipelines which keep bursting now & then due to age, I hope utmost precaution is taken to change the same as appropriate.

In conclusion, looking from safety, risks & cost factors involved, it would have been appropriate to keep under road/highways, instead of going under private/and/or/public land as it is not something you can play around with.

Knowing the ways of life in India, If somebody accidentally digs and ruptures the pipeline, that's catastrophic & THE END!!

We had fertile beautiful land of 8 acres which was lost to MRPL for pea nuts (1 or 2 lacs per acre). We use to grow all the 3 crops and still water reserves never dried up. Now some time I feel like crying thinking of that land. Now one cannot dream of making such land with prevailing exorbitant price. I can understand the pain of these locals. But, change is inevitable. Is it for good or bad God only knows.

Is it possible to lay a Gas pipe line from Bangalore to Mangalore without passing through some farming fields?

Gas\oil and other such pipelines have to take a straight route, as much as possible to avoid exorbitant cost for laying the same.
Although feel sorry for these people, they have no choice but to give up their land required by the Government.
As per latest Land acquisition Act, people will be paid fair price and I think they will be relocated too.

One cannot be selfish and long for modernisation too..

There is a existing pipeline from MRPL to Bangalore which was laid few years back. Why cant HPCL Pipeline can take the same route or use the same infrastructure which is already in place.

Alternatively the pipeline should be constructed adjacent to the Highway which will not require acquisition of the agricultural land.
