Bantwal, Oct 6: The Indian Medical Association, Bantwal unit has announced a day-long shutdown of all medical services in private hospitals in the taluk on Monday October 7, in protest against the allegations levelled against doctors by the locals over the death of gram panchayat vice-president Shakuntala.

GP vice-president Shakuntala

On September 20, Shakuntala was admitted to a hospital for delivery passed away after developing sudden complications. The doctors then advised the family to take her to Mangalore, but she breathed her last on the way. Angered by the incident, the locals staged several protests over the following days demanding justice and alleging doctors of negligence.

Speaking to mediapersons on Saturday October 5, Indian Medical Association president Dr Sureshchandra Shetty said, "It is wrong to blame the entire medical fraternity for the death of one patient. In connection to this case, investigation is going and before it is over, it is wrong to point out at any doctor. The incident has hurt the doctors."

He added, "Negligence by doctor is a technical issue and the decision will be taken by the specialist doctors' technical committee. But without understanding this matter, a few associations by way of protests are confusing people and misguiding them. People who talk about careless of doctors should first see to what extent the doctor is to be blamed in the case.

"Diseases affect people in different ways. In some cases, medicines do not work as expected. When this is the case, it is the patient’s body that is responsible and not the doctor," he said.

"Whenever a patient visits doctor, he or she wants the doctor to show humanity. But when something goes wrong, the patient tries to take legal action against the doctor. With this, the relationship between a patient and a doctor weakens and if this continues, in future the doctors might have to view the patients 'legally' and not with humanity," he added.

"Massive protests and rallies by associations spoil the relationship between doctor and patient. Instead, the associations should work towards giving pro-people amenities for poor patients like increasing the condition of government hospitals, establishing blood banks and so on," Dr Shetty said.

IMA members Dr M M Sharif, Dr Atmaranjan Rai, Dr Vasanth Baliga, Dr Dhananjay Baliga among others were present.

    YES-
Mistakes take place in any fields, but death is ultimate in Medical field.
Protest by wearing or tie-ing Black Ribbon, could've been a Decent Way of Protest.
Call a Press Conference & Air your Grievance & a Symbolic Sit In are other Options, but Satyagraha is a TOOL of Fools, who inconvinience others & think they will GAIN.

Shame on you IMA.atleast for the oath you took please act on. Instead of pulling up your doctor and conducting the audit in line with standard medical guidelines - what you are doing shows your stupidity and your gangism. we all know what happens on IMA meet and what knowledge u take home from there. have concerns towards your patients or just resign up from your profession .Shame once again. as i lost a cousin in same very much incident as above - the dr came late and nurses who are not even qualified tried on behalf of the dr. and ur IMA supported the dr FYKI. SHAMEEEE

Doctors should conduct social awareness programs instead of strike.Let them convey the message to public that they are trying their best and if they cant handle they have to seek experts help to save life.No point in protesting like this. All healthcare providers should conduct such campaigns and educate public in their areas.

Let me put in my observations on the medical services offered in rural areas. First of all, the doctors in these places are totally disconnected with the recent developemnts in medical field. The most common OTC drugs or the one recommended by their favorite MR will be prescribed. IMA meetings are just for snacks, tea and gossips.
Infact these hospitals are feeding points to the ultra modern hospitals in Mangalore. For each case refered, these doctors will get commissions. Every patient referred for a scan, eco doppler scan, 3d scan, CT, MRI etc will have different levels of commissions which are lucrative.
For obstetrics, the woman is given normal protein supplements and referred to a scanning centre on each trimister. If there is any last moment complications, the doctor instead of taking risks, referrs again to city hospitals and again a commission.
The big hospitals even do marketing utives to lure doctors in the rurall area.
So the whole medical system is rotten and stinking. All hospitals have been converted into money sucking machines!

Earlier days, during our childhood doctors were next to God. However, the time has changed now. The greed to amass wealth has turned doctors in to money minting machine. Six months ago I took my mother (83 years old and diabetic) to a well known orthopedic surgeon in Mangalore for the treatment of pain in leg fingure. On studying X-ray report, doctor immediately advised me to get her admitted in one of the famous hospitals in order to amputate her fingure. However, I took her to Mumbai to another doctor for second opinion who prescribed tablets for blood circulation and brushed aside the advise of amputation. Thank God, my mother is fine with the tablets. Readers, please do not blindly follow the advise of these selfish doctors, but, ensure to get second opinion from one or two more doctors. In greed of collecting few thousand rupees, doctors misguide the innocent people who worship doctors as life saving God. Truly, some Doctors are disgrace to this very blessed profession. God save us.

it is the right step what the health service as taken infact should be shut down for 2 3 days so these people learn a lesson when no one is there when they or their loved one is sick, everytime someone dies for some complications people blame the Doctor's and starts beating him up or damaging the hospital this a lesson for these dumb people.

It is unfortunate IMA,which is APEX Body of doctors calling for a Strike. It should sort it out the problems.Patients and Doctors are two faces of same coin. The death is indeed unfortunate and for this incident a investigation from appropriate authority or IMA appointed Doctors team,Civil and govt rep can be asserted.Mr UT Khader,Honorable health Minister can be do needful to solve the issue.Doctor's services are noble and in that context the issues are to be sorted it out.DOCTORS ARE NEXT TO GOD
