Dubai: Yusuffali most powerful Indian in Gulf for 4th year in row

Dubai, Oct 6 (PTI):
NRI businessman Yusuffali MA, who runs the largest retail chain in the UAE, has topped the list of the most powerful Indians in the Gulf region for the 4th time in a row with an annual turnover of USD 4.5 billion.

Kerala-born Yusuffali, Managing Director of Abu Dhabi- based EMKE Group which owns many brands including the Lulu chain of hypermarkets, employs around 27,000 people, including 22,000 Indians, in 29 nations.

Feroz Allana of the Allana Group, which manufactures and markets a well-integrated range of consumer products, came second in the list of '100 most powerful Indians in the GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council)' published today by Arabian Business magazine.

Standard Chartered banking boss V Shankar stood third, ahead of healthcare boss Dr B R Shetty, with legendary investor Ragu Kataria completing the top five.

Ashish Mehta was the highest placed lawyer at number seven, with Sunil John leading the way for entries from PR and Media, at number 14.

The list was propped up by Geebee Group boss G B Jethwani in 100th place.

This year's list also featured a record 11 female entries, with 20th placed Zulekha Daud leading the way, ahead of Jumbo Group boss Vidya Chhabria ranked 39th. Diva Modelling founder Nicole Larsen made her first ever appearance in the list in 52nd place.

Arabian Business editor Ed Attwood said, "The contribution of the Indian community to the growth of the GCC has been nothing short of spectacular, and everyone on this list has played and continues to play a major part in that story."

Those figuring in the list will be honoured on October 28 at a gala event in Dubai, with cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar appearing as the guest of honour.

The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Congratulations to all the achievers, and especially Yousuf Ali and B R Shetty. I had the good fortune of dealing with these two fantastic persons when I worked for a nationalized bank in the 90s in Abu Dhabi. I knew their potential and it has been proved that they are matchless. God bless them with long life and good health.

Indian businessmen and entrepreneurs have had a successful footing in the Gulf region from the time the British had established their British India Trading Company spreading their wings of trade and commerce for a global strategy. Indian merchants and trading houses in the Gulf region are matured and seasoned businessmen who have masterminded their global trading connections from the time Vasco da Gama set his sails towards East Indies in the 16th century. In fact, when Vasco da Gama developed engine troubles for his motor boat, records reveal that he stopped by at Fujaira for repairs and picked up some Arab sailors in order to guide him the way to India where they landed in Calicut. Many of these Arab sailors chose to stay behind in Kerala and that's why there is a close tie up between Kerala and the Arab Gulf psychologically as well as historically. Indians have been trustworthy partners with the Arabs in the Gulf region.

When Americans and the British came to the Persian Gulf region for exploring Oil in the early 30's India was the focal point for transit shipping and also the onward transportation. The small Dakota planes carrying Oil Men and Oil Tools came from the West to Bombay and then people from the west came to Bahrain by motor vessels enroute to Saudi Arabia by country dhows. The British India Steam Navigation was an old established ship route from Bomabay to Basrah.

This is a historical tie up between the world and India for transit passage and shipments to the Gulf countries. Indians have been admired as good merchants, honest traders and hard workers, and the Arabs in their own hearts and minds know the value of Indians that have contributed for the progress and prosperity of the entire region.

May this historical relations between India and the Gulf region continue to flourish with greater opportunities of collaborations and cooperation so that both Arabs and the Indians will benefit for a long way to come. Assalam Alekhum.
