Udupi: Man in drunken stupor gives 'high tension' to locals

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi

Udupi, Oct 7: In an amusing incident, a drunk man who had a quarrel with a friend over a trivial issue gave vent to his anger by climbing an electric pole and hanging on the wires, thus creating momentary panic among passersby and the police.

The incident took place near Geetanjali theatre on Sunday October 6.

The man, identified as Rajesh from Mangalore, had a petty quarrel with a friend and being in drunken stupor, he climbed a nearby electric pole. Even as people watched the 'shocking' sight, Rajesh proceeded to catch hold of the wires and dangled from there.

The passersby showed presence of mind and immediately called Mescom and got the electricity supply switched off, which saved the man's life.

Meanwhile, despite repeated pleas by the people, Rajesh refused to climb down, and continued to dangle from the wires.

Fearing that he may lose balance any minute, the locals got a large piece of cloth and held it to break his fall.

The police arrived at the spot along with fire brigade personnel. However, instead of climbing down, the man leaped on to a nearby building. When the locals attempted to catch hold of him, he again jumped over to another building.

This way, he kept the locals, police and firemen on their toes for about an hour, until he was finally caught by the locals and handed over to the police.

He was later admitted to Ajjarkad district hospital.

What amused me is that a drunken person could leap into a nearby building, I can imagine how close these wires are to this building and kids can easily reach with a rod or metal bar

Dear Hubert,Person cannot hold the live wire as the condition shown here.Birds never get shock even sit on the live wire because they freely approach without touching anything.Human has to approach the wire climbing the pole so the feet will be in contact with the pole. This may be possible if a person equiped with insulated dry gloves and familiar in such profession. It is mere luck saved this man because he hold the neutral wire.At 415 volts current passing through the body as low as 30 milli ampere will cause fibrillation of heart and acidental fall due to shock can be fatal.

@Bollu,sometimes I ask myself reading some comments, here who is drunken one, whether the man on electric pole or commentator.who will give a Job to a man who is under alcohol works or does such Rowdy acts,he is sick.and gives out Money to Alcohol not ready for responsibility.and when one has no Job,doesnt mean should take bath in Alcohol. When anybody here in Germany does such adventure climbing to electric pole willbe arrested, put in custody and nextday will get a notice and punished hard for voilence.(Normally none does but in alcohol influence can happen).

He is lucky to survive. We can make out from the picture that he is holding a neutral wire which is at negative potential.Instead if he had contact with any of other 3 phase wires death is certain by electrocution and fall from the height.Need councelling and rehabilitation.
