Mangalore: Gold worth Rs 25 lac found under seat in flight, one arrested

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 8: The officials of the customs department arrested a passenger at Mangalore International Airport on Monday October 7 for trying to smuggle 1 kg of gold.

The arrested is identified as Yusuf Koppala (35) from Kasargod.

The value of the seized gold is estimated to be Rs 25 lac.

It is said that Yusuf demanded '23 C' seat in the Jet Airways flight. Even though the airport officials tried to placate him and offered another seat, he remained adamant and insisted on getting the same seat.

Seeing his persistent demand, the officials grew suspicious. The customs officials along with Jet Airways flight officers then inspected the flight and found one kg of gold in the form of biscuit beneath the 23 C seat.

After landing in Mangalore, the same flight connects to Mumbai where it lands in the domestic terminal. It is said that the gold was hidden in the flight by another passenger, an accomplice of Yusuf who boarded the flight in Dubai. Yusuf, by getting into the same flight in Mangalore, was supposed to take the gold from 23 C seat and hand it over to another person in Mumbai, for which he was promised money, it is learnt.

Bringing gold from other country, especially from Dubai is not a crime(must have valid receipt for the gold).
If you are taking gold with you don't hide it or not try to cheat customs officers, just show them-if you are not able to pay the tax(which is almost equal to the gold price)-ask customs officer to write(stamp) in passport assuring them-you will take back while returning. This is a clause which most of the expatriate dont know, please always show what you have in possession, dont worry they cannot do anything-customs officer are just paid workers, always insist original receipt for the fine.

Like I mentioned last time, bringing Gold from Dubai is not a crime. You can get away easily with your Gold by paying the tax (if caught), provided the value of Gold is below INR 1 crore. You also need to provide the source of the money. In this case, I am not sure if he can claim the Gold as it was not in his possession. If the govt. says he can't claim it as it was not in his possession, then the case won't stand in any court. If the govt. says the Gold was caught from him, then he can get the Gold by paying the due tax. Another thing is, the original traveler (the one who actually brought the gold) can go to the airlines claiming missing luggage and can take it out easily by paying the tax. There are so many loopholes...

Dear Sachidananda Shetty, partly I agree with your comments. At the same time would like to bring to your notice that, these Sena and Vedikes too have members from neighboring states. Last time when I was in one of the Bar & Restaurants in Mangalore, there was a group of around 7 people sitting next to my table with some kind of threads around their wrist, big 'naama' on their forehead, with dozens of Beer Bottles & variety of non-veg dishes on their table. I was dressed in black tea shirt, beige color pant, white shoes and with beard. Few of them were communicating in Malayalam and others in Tulu. One guy seeing my white shoes referred me to another 'Pachcha' in Malayalam, means green. By my appearance he thought I belong to a particular minority community. Owner of Bar told me that they do not belong to any Sena or Vedike, but, they are hired by Sena & Vedike whenever they are required to create trouble and they are not from Karnataka. The Contract Goons.

No wonder AIE stopped allowing passengers to reserve seats at the time of online booking. I was wondering why they did that because having a choice of seat is such a wonderful service.
Well as is normal everyone suffers because of a few rotten apples.

Rameshji, don’t take it serious when people like Jossey, Joseph, Declan and few others likely minded from Dubai or Saudi reiterate something. Because they read the Indian history starting from and limited to BJP rule in Kar_Nataka only. Just ask them to write down the zero succeeding 176 or 185 Lakhs Crores of Rupees in 2G and Coal Gate Scams respectively

I am very surprised to see the Mangalore Airport is bit busy with smuggling gold biscuits by Kasargod passengers?. Is all the smuggling takes place only from this airport? or we have our honest customs officers in duty or other airport are like 50-50 Britannia biscuits? Many questions which is un-answered!!!.

Now I am sure even In house Flight Cleaner will check each and every seats in all flights coming from Gulf Countries hoping for hidden treasury. I wonder why these Keralites in particular always interested in doing smuggling only? May be because they think that paying duty or taxes is “Haraam” in their local community? I think Mangalore is spoiled not because of any Sene or Vedike but because of Keralites and other outsiders only
