Mangalore, Oct 8: Taranath Shetty who was working in Mumbai for the past 15 years has sought justice in connection to the murder of his wife Shalini Shetty in Mumbai on May 3, 2011.

Taranath's wife Shalini (30), daughter of Anni Shetty from Perindile Mane in Laila village in Beltangady taluk, was found murdered on May 3, 2011 at the couple's flat in Nallasopara in Mumbai. The accused Ninjur Ashok Shetty, a relative of Taranath, was arrested a month later.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday October 6, Taranath said that he married Shalini (30) on May 7, 2009 and his wife was pregnant when she was murdered.

Shalini was found dead on May 3 night when Taranath returned home after work. Looking at the body, Taranath suspected that it was murder.

The police were facing difficulties initially in cracking the case. Taranath Shetty told police about his suspicions on Ashok Shetty, a close relative who had visited their house a few days before she was found murdered, which helped the police make a headway into the case.

Following this, police kept a track on Ashok's movements and also traced his phone calls. Soon, Ashok was arrested at his wife’s house near Maripalla of Farangipet inJune 2011.

The accused Ashok Shetty was brought to Mumbai for interrogation, where he confessed the crime and said that he took away all her jewellery after murdering her.

"I visited court several times for about one year. I was sure that the accused would be punished as the case was in favour of me. But the case took a U-turn on September 26, when the court ruled that there were not enough witnesses to prove Ashok as guilty.

Saddened by the incident, Taranath on Tuesday addressed the media and said he would approach the high court to seek justice for his wife’s murder.

Anand Shetty, Shalini’s Shetty’s brother Janardhan Shetty, niece Jayashree, Taranath Shetty’s brother Shekar Shetty among others were present at the press meet.

Our law enforcement agencies and the Indian criminal justice system are still stuck 19th century.

In the age of forensics where they uncover murders committed decades ago through science and technology, we still rely on "witnesses" for murders ? Who commits a murder with witnesses around anyways ? The absurdity of our judiciary is mind numbing !

Right Mathew. IPC is ages old and so many loopholes and criminals are well aware of it and taking advantage of it.

In Indian law as long as circumstantial and direct evidence are not found - you are free - doesnt matter you killed/murdered/raped/looted right in front of the judge.

If there's no evidencce, no witness then the accused is all set to walk free.

Kanoon andha hi nahi - lachar bhi hai.

Ye kanoon toh ab achar daalne ke bhi layak nahi.

After losing the Court battle in Session Court, there is no point in proceeding further in Higher Court. Better he should leave this case in God’s Darbaar so that he will take proper action. Though it is not natural but what else Taranath can do in this case?
