Mangalore: Cheated by job agents, nine youths return from Abu Dhabi

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore

Mangalore, Oct 9: A group of youth who went to the Gulf for employment returned to their hometown on Tuesday October 8, after being allegedly cheated by agents who promised them lucrative jobs in Abu Dhabi.

The nine youths of coastal districts returned home empty-handed without any job after spending a fruitless month there.

Mohammed Naushad from Ullal, Abdul Javed from Chikmagalur, Jagadish Nayak from Honnavar, Ashraf from Ullal, Hussain Zakaria from Padubidri, Abdul Rahim from Manjeshwar, Mohammed Basheer from Uppinangady, Raghava Poojary from Udupi and Firoz Mannava from Udupi were the youths who landed back at Mangalore airport from Abu Dhabhi on Tuesday.

After landing at Mangalore International Airport, the youths shared their problems, disappoinment and experiences with media persons.

Four months back, the agents who got in touch with the youths introduced a person named Sayyed, who was operating in Kudroli. Sayyed collected a sum of Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lac each from 21 people. The amount included fee for visa, air ticket fares and guarantee of job.

"The agent promised us jobs at Royal Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi with a salary of 1,250 Dirhams along with food and accommodation, and hence I mortgaged gold and arranged the money," said Abdul Javed.

The group got a first shock on September 17, when, after landing in Abu Dhabi they were taken to a date manufacturing unit instead of the hotel. The agents also told them that half of their salary will be deducted.

The date manufacturing unit was in a desert area where, after a long wait of two hours, the agents promised a salary of 800 Dirhams. In additional, 150 dirhams was collected as visa charge from them.

"We were not even provided with food, medical benefits and six of us were made to stay in one room," they said.

Saddened by the incident, a group of 10 workers approached the court for justice and others went in search of better jobs. As they had approached the court, their salary was increased to 950 Dirhams and they were sent to Abu Dhabi for work.

But these youths from coastal districts were reportedly made to clean the roads and stay in houses as good as slums. Later on October 3, they were terminated from the job and when the company was asked to give back their passports, the employer demanded one month's salary, they said.

Unable to pay the money, the nine youths began living on the road side. Noticing their condition, a member of India Fraternity Forum (IFF) rescued them by seeking the help of labour court, through which they obtained their passports as well as return air tickets.

"Now we have huge amount of loan on us and we do not know how to repay it. We have also planned to file a complaint against the agents," said the youths.

Now Young men,you learnt a very good lesson.but bad experience.dont rely on roaming about agents. They are earning good Money better than in gulf countries so Long as you believe them and fooling you.Now in India also can earn Money if you honestly work. There is lot of work .you are Young .think of Family and hard working in india is also better than as you know in hot sun in Abudhabi. Here in TV:rumours are going around about workers from asian countries working in Qatar living in a poor Situation who are working for Football Play to be Held in future. so Forget about UAE.There are People in india who have more Money and land than gulf workers .you willbe more happy here than elsewhere.

    Dear Mr. Bangera,
Good explanation about the labour law of GCC. But the real picture in GCC is totally different than the labour laws. In this case it is not said that they have been hired from a company, it means they are on visit visa (?). NO HR Manager or company will provide a ticket to employee if he resign his duty with in 6 or 8 months of service...they may on medical background but not obligatory. And the OT, is just a joke.. they hardly got salary's that too after filing a complaint in Labour court.. Indian Embassy staffs in GCC countries are treating Indians like Strangers.. do they really help us..?! Their behaviour with us like we are their enemies... I agree take contact numbers of some Groups & contact them in case of emergency the will sure help you, better than going in search of Indian Embassy (do you think My comment is wrong? )

As per GCC law employer has to provide all the facility to the employee who is working in the company. No ticket charges and no VISA cost has to be levied on employees in case of resignation. Please cross check about the companies where your are going to be employed with your friends and also you can check through Indian embassy and through Google. In case of unfair termination employee can file a case on company. also you can claim your OT and other allowances if your eligible and no employer can take away your rights.

Before traveling to gulf countries please note down the indian embassy contact numbers so that you can reach then during the time of distress.

    Regards

There is no control on employment sourced by the agents in india. If you take Sri Lanka, South east countries they are very well concerned about thier citizen. No person can leave the country unless the Ministry of forgien affairs has verified their employment. They do the cross verification via the consulate or embassy based in that country. They authonticate the documents and confirm if the job is is real or fake. But in india, nothing is been checked and thus youths get into trap from the sweet talks of these agents. Feel real sorry for these guys, who have pledge all their belongigs to find a suitable employment to win their daily bread.

There are reliable recruiting agencies with required govt registrations who will charge a nominal fee for their services. Gulf job seekers should approach such agencies only instead of some cheating Kaka agencies!

There are worse conditions than these, many laboures are not paid for months together, just because when one is on leave spend's some money lavishly, does not mean he has plenty of money. People in India think that money is just on trees in the Gulf, only time is needed to pluck, count and deposit it. These people did not go for the worse if it were Keralites they would have been working in the date packing factory. I have not seen any one manufacturing dates, but grown in farms. Better luck next time boys. Dont leave that agent take your money back.

Story of these youths is really pathetic,Now our representatives have to arrange proper job to these youths as per their qualification and experience or else these youths will 100% involve in illigal activities in order to pay back their debts and loans, they have no other option.

    Very sad n unfortunate.

Not all agents are fraud but some of them n its very difficult to recognise in advance who is what..

Chase the agent n bring him to the hands of law.

After a long time such incident reported.

Felt very sad for the people who got cheated by fraud agents. People who go through the agents should cross check about the companies via their friends who already leave in gulf countries. Should not believe any agent directly.
