Bantwal, Oct 9: A private bus toppled and fell into a stream near Kudkoli at Siddakatte here Wednesday October 9, injuring over 20 people.

Speeding and reckless driving is said to be the cause for the mishap. Though no loss of life has been reported, more than twenty people were injured in the accident. The injured have been hospitalized in different private hospitals.

The bus was plying from BC Road to Moodbidri and Karkala. As it approached Kudkoli minor bridge near the slope, the driver lost control due to speeding, turned twice on the road, went skidding towards an electric pole on the right side and fell on it. It subsequently rolled off the minor bridge and fell down. The bus was completely damaged due to the impact.

The street light was uprooted. Several passengers including students going to Moodbidri college, girls going for work at cashew factory and people going to work in other places were in the bus.

The injured passengers were taken to hospitals by the auto rickshaw drivers and other local people. After first aid, they were taken to hospitals in Mangalore, Moodbidri and Bantwal by ambulance.

SI Nagaraj of Bantwal police station and team visited the place and further investigation is on.

The onlookers blamed reckless driving of the driver for the accident. Though Kudkori junction is steep, the driver drover the bus too fast and could not control it causing the accident, they said. As the bus dashed against the electric pole, the driver jumped off from the bus. Passengers' bags, lunch boxes, footwear, mobiles, keys etc were scattered in the bus. Some items also fell in the stream.

As the rain was less, the flow of water was less in the stream. This prevented a major mishap. Besides, as the bus toppled with the doors of the bus at the top, passengers were not thrown out. Though the street light was uprooted, the electricity got disconnected immediately preventing loss of life.

Some of the injured are Annalike resident Sridhar, Gladis, Haris, Jeevan Kiran etc. Though many were injured, their names were notimmediately available.

People always blame reckless driving, but nobody is ready to share their road margin land to widen the road. The road from Bantwal to Moodbidri has more than hundred curves and very dangerous to drive day or night.

I have travelled in city buses in places like Mumbai, Muscat, Bangalore and various cities in Gujarat.

But, when compared to those buses and its services, following points can be noticed in Mangalore “City buses” –

    1) Mangalore “City buses” take their own sweet time to travel from one spot to another, when no other “City bus” is behind. But the moment another “City bus” is spotted behind, Mangalore city roads become Formula 1 race tracks.

    2) For most of the drivers of Mangalore “City bus”, whenever / wherever a passenger says ‘stop’, there is a bus stop. This could even be in the middle of the road!!!!

    3) To make up on the lost time while travelling, most of the Mangalore “City bus” drivers have the liberty to go off route!!!

    4) Almost all the road signs / speed breakers etc are invisible to most of the drivers of Mangalore “City bus”. Specially at the roundabouts or traffic islands. Also most of the “City bus” drivers expect other vehicle drivers (who adhere traffic rules) to ignore the rules too.

And there are many instances / cases about the Mangalore “City buses”, which unfortunately could not commented within 2000 characters.

Therefore, I feel, it is high time to scrap the privatization of Mangalore “City buses” and introduce the government city buses on all routes. Or else God save passengers, pedestrians and other vehicle drivers.

What a joke mangalore & DK buses are!
It is up to us citizens of DK to demand KSRTC buses & throw out all these rickety private buses. They are nothing but horrors on the roads & ticking time bombs that will blow up anytime.

It is sad that so many people got injured. People only wake up when tragedy strikes them. It is beauty to watch when house next door hit by lightning. But it is ugly when hits their own. Hundreds come to watch the accident and to throw stones and smack Driver but none there to call the Police Control Room to inform when driver of the bus speeding out of control. Have you seen the speeding Nandini Milk Vans on City roads with Horns blowing non-stop. When asked Police about it,their answer is that those Vans carry milk which is prohibiting them to stop. Garbage trucks do not cover their load thus spilling the garbage on road. When questioning Police, their answer is that these are City Contract Vehicles. Now again Buses started to play their Air Horns after short break. So when family members get hurt in tragedy,it is a wake up call.

Most of drivers in this particular route are very careless.. This seem to be like Maha Ganesha Visargane in the River. Bus owners better to keep eye on your employees and try to get feedback from passengers regularly

Most of the private bus drivers are having less care about safety of human life n more caring about thier time schedules.

Zinda ya murda....bas.. pauncho time pe....

Such driver's license should be cancelled permanently.

We should not blame it on drivers Both RTO & PWD ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ROAD ACCIDENTS. no measures taken to safety of road users. Rural roads are neglected by concerned departments.leave NH, State Govt should keep state highways in good roadable condition.for example useless condition of shimoga-karkala, udupi-hiriadka-karkala roads.
