Bangalore: Four of a family charred to death in van

Bangalore, Oct 10 (DHNS): Four members of a family from the city died when a van in which they were travelling caught fire on National Highway 205 on the outskirts of Palamaner town on Wednesday morning.

The victims—Satyanarayana, 52, his wife, Mahalakshmi, 45, and their children, Prashanth Kumar, 27, and Deepa Mala, 23—were residents of Sampangirama Nagar in the city. They had gone to the temple town of Tirupati and were returning to the city when the accident occurred.

Satyanarayana, who was apparently driving the vehicle, Mahalakshmi and Deepa Mala who were asleep in the back seat were charred to death. Prashanth Kumar who was seated in the front seat managed to jump out. He was found with serious burns. He was rushed to hospital. Later, he also died.

A senior police official with Palamaner police station who visited the spot told Deccan Herald the accident occurred around 4:10 am. By the time they alerted fire services and rushed to the spot, the police found the van’s doors jammed.

Kanti Rana Tata, SP, Chittoor, told Deccan Herald that the police were investigating the cause of the fire.

Autopsies were conducted on the three bodies at Chittoor Government Hospital. The bodies were handed over to the relatives of the victims on Wednesday afternoon.

Those were my family members. My uncle, aunt, sister and brother. Prashanth and I were born with a difference of 5 days. I was raised with him in a joint family, took my first step with him.

Just to clarify, firstly, it is not a suicide. I know them far too well to know that much. And secondly, it was a Maruti Omni petrol (No LPG kit). We are yet to figure out what exactly went wrong.

RIP Chikkappa, Chikkamma, Prashanth and Deepa. I really miss you guys.

Such a tragedy. Never heard of a accident of fire where the occupants had no time to escape. Only in crashes where fuel tank is involved this can happen. We can only guess the vehicle was using LPG. Sleep might have dimmed the senses of all so that they did not smell the fumes. All those using LPG kits in cars please take care. My prayers for the family left behind.

Can anybody get the details of the van. I mean, everywhere it's mentioned as van. Is it a Maruthi Van or any high end SUV .. just for better understanding... But still not acceptable to have all the passengers to stick in the car till the fire spread fatal ? Didn't they have time to exit by the time fire spreads around ... ?
No idea... but tragedy has happened already. No use discussing now. The whole family vanished with in few minutes. RIP

    Dear Bharath
I never take message as it is written rather question it.
Here it seems like suicide unless if the fire caught to the engine when the vehicle is moving, then the chance of spreading to the entire vehicle is great. If the vehicle got fire when it was halted, then, it might be a suicide. some thing very strange. All who are travelling in the vehicle are adult.
    RIP to all.

    Sad incident indeed.

This incident should Show cause the manufacturers to introduce alternative solution to exit in case of malfunction or on any emergency situation.

Heat of Burning would melt the lining & doors get jammed.
Central Locking was there or not is not known.
There is no mention of whether the fuel or LPG was used in the Van.
    Rest In Peace.
