Mangalore: Rare surgery at Father Muller saves man's foot from amputation

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SS)

Mangalore, Oct 12: In a rare surgery performed by a young doctor at Father Muller Medical College Hospital, a 44-year-old daily wage earner who nearly lost his leg in a freak accident got it back by reconstruction.

A daily wage earner and a farmer by profession, Satish (name changed) was happily going about his work for the last five years at an estate in Sakleshpur, until tragedy struck on a fateful day.

On Monday October 7, when Satish was at work cutting trash with a grass cutter, it rammed into his left leg cutting off his ankle.

The incident took place at around 1 pm and he was rushed to a local clinic by his son, but due to inadequacy of resources in the clinic, Satish was taken to Hassan district hospital where the surgery was not conducted as they were unsure whether the foot could survive and bandaged the wound.

Satish was then taken to Wenlock Hospital at around 7 pm in the hope of better treatment. More than six hours had passed since the accident and doctors at Wenlock Hospital told him an amputation was required. But Satish’s son was not ready to give up.

Satish was then brought to Father Muller Hospital, more than 24 hours since the accident. The foot was just hanging with a tag of skin. Normally in these types of injury the separated part is discarded and the patient becomes an amputee. But Dr Latheesh Latheef, associate professor and head of hand and microsurgery unit, department of orthopaedics, along with Dr Asif Hassan and his team took it as a challenge and performed the rare surgery on Satish and saved his foot. The cut neurovascular and tendons were repaired by microsurgical technique after stabilising the fracture. The surgery was five hours long. Miraculously, the limb has shown signs of recovery even though it was without blood supply for more than a day. The patient is recovering well.

The cost of the operation was borne by the estate owner.

The doctors have said that Satish will completely recover in the next three to six months.

Well done Dr. Latheesh Latheef/Dr Asif & Team. You have done a commendable job. I have doubts if any Doctor in south India has taken such a brave decision in reconstructing a more than 24 Hours old part of body. May god bless the Team of Drs and give courage & strength to them for saving many lives in the coming Years. I have heard that Dr .Latheesh Latheef has come in the news earlier by reconstructing a crushed finger miraculously. I thank the almighty & also the Father Muller's Management for standing with Performers.

Whenever, we speak of one hospital, It is important that we do not put another hospital in bad light. It may be your turn to be on the wrong side next time. Wenlock hospital has served millions of people and continues to do so, free of cost.

More than anything, we must thank the estate owner for being so spontaneous in coming forward to bear the charges without which probably this operation might not have happened - everyone knows the reasons.

Secondly I appreciate the valuable tips given by MDsouza and John D'Silva which may turn out to be very crucial on such occasions.

Without forgetting, hats off to the doctors.

It is indeed heartening to note that there are good samaritan Doctors who do not lose hope. 24 hours is along period and patient must have lost lots and lots of blood. To take a risk to undertake an operation which must have prolonged to 12 hours is commendable. The patients son gets the credit for the diehard attitude. Dr Latheesh Latheef and Dr.Asif Hassan and their team of Doctors and Paramedical deserve special mention. Impossible was made a possibility and the future of a poor labourer who would have ended up as a handicap for the rest of his life has been given hope. When medical science and Healthcare have become a big business, such mindset and attitude of Doctors and paramedicals give great hope. may their tribe increase. GOD BLESS.....Millath

Dear commentators at least disclose the name of doctors who performed this tremendous impossible job which is rejected from Wenlock a famous government hospital in manglaore so all these credits goes to Dr. Latheef and Dr. Asif Hassan of Father Muller.

I do remember my accident (1981) and the treatment which I got from Fr.Muller’s. from Dr. Shenoy, Dr. Furtado and their team and they saved my leg and me too. The whole hospital staff prayed for me. God heard my Mother’s cry and I am still alive. Thanks to my friends who donated the blood and my family members who supported me. Thanks to Late Ex- IGP, Late Mr. Blasius D’souza and all friends. God is great.

Congratulations to doctors.Great job.His son is very optimistic.Operating any power tool is a high risk job hence the operator need special training. It is sad to see in many cases power tools does not have proper safety guards and the design is of very low standard lack of even emergency stop switches.Let there be awareness to all power tool users in case of accident, seperated part to be put in a clean plastic bag surrounded by ice cubes to avoid decomposition.Injured part bleeding to be restricted. If reached early to hospital doctors can reconstruct the damaged part.

Son and the doctors should get the credit. Good job.
It is very important to educate all labourers/industrial workers/butchers/those work with machineries any major injury to the peripheries like hand/fingers/foot/toes, to stop bleeding by pressure dressing and store/transport the cut/seperated part in ice.
