Bantwal, Oct 13: The grotto of Mary at Our Lady of Loretto Church, Loretto here was damaged by miscreants on the intervening night between Saturday October 12 and Sunday October 13.

The incident came to light on Sunday October 13 when a youth noticed the damaged glass of the grotto.

It is suspected that the glass of mother Mary statue in the grotto was damaged by the miscreants with two soda bottles which were found at the spot. A part of the statue is said be damaged.

Speaking to Daijiworld, parish priest Fr Oswald Monteiro said as soon as the incident came to light, Bantwal town police were informed. The incident took place between 10 pm and 5 am, he said.

Town SI Venkataramana, Puttur DSP H D Mendonca, circle inspector visited the spot and investigated the incident.

As soon as the news spread, people from neighboring parishes like Agrar, Modankap, Bambil and others visited the church and recited prayers in front of the grotto.

Since 12:30 pm, hundreds of parishioners have been protesting in the church premises. The protestors are waiting for minister Ramanath Rai’s visit.

A case has been registered at Bantwal town police station.

As long as we keep quite, such acts will keep recurring.
The name of the parish priest is Fr.Oswald Lasrado and not Fr.Oswald Monteiro as mentioned in the article.
Just wanted to put forth this error.

How do we feel when someone hurts "Our Mother"? Can't imagine people can stoop this low. Whoever did this, go in a dark room, bow down in front of the ever forgiving Mother Mary and ask forgiveness. She will lift you up, give you a warm hug and forgive you because you are Her child too and Mothers don't differentiate between a good and a bad child.

A wonderful thought/suggestion by Mr. Vivian Kalianpur. The miscreants goal is to instigate us to react & protest. If we remain calm and brush aside these incidents they will fail in their goal. They can break statues, but, not our faith in Jesus, Savior of the World.

The damage to the grotto may be small and the glass can be replaced.
The point is not the money part of it but the act of desecration by the miscreants. A thorough investigation must be conducted and the persons (irrespective of their religion)should be brought to book. People opposed to peace and harmony among all regions want to create hatred and misunderstanding. But however much they try, they will not succeed in their misplaced endeavor. Ultimately one day they will have to give account to God of their deeds(misdeeds).

There is no need to mouth any bad words to this act of wayward person\s whether intentionally or in a stupour.

It has been proved earlier and it will be proved in the future too - any one disturbing the GOD's prayer places will get the punishment they deserve from GOD himself, directly.
Those involved already know and those getting involved will also get know by themselves and will repent their wrong wrong ways.

Do not hate these people, they do not know what they are doing.

All pray for their salvation and light to show them good, neighbourly living.

Catholics greatest weapons was prayer.. if the faith is so strong among the catholics nobody would have even thinking of destroying any church properties
But now the catholics leaders are more into building monuments without trying to cultivate the faith in them.
I would suggest in future anywhere a attack happens in any of the church compound i request i just repair it by yourself without filing any complaints.. just keep praying with and forgive them those who did this kind of vandalism...
and nothing will happening to church or religious places
if nothing comes to limelight no one has interest to do anything wrong for the sake of politicizing or communalising..
By putting this all on the news we all are giving the fooder to the this kind of miscreants...

Similar vandalism had taken place in a Church near Ranipura near Thokkottu just couple of years back. After police inquiry it was detected that two Drunkards from Christian community itself had committed that Crime and tried to divert suspicion on some other community by leaving behind some pamphlets belonging to another community. So, in this case also blaming some other community may be premature. Wait till Police inquiry brings out the truth.

whoever has done this,is with an intention of taking grudge but without the guts to express, needs to be identified and punished according to law, that alone will cast away the shadow of doubt, the mistrust and spread of ill will amongst communities. Let us all condemn the heinous intentions and maintain our cool, and thus the defeat his intentions.

Everyone knows that we Christians do not retaliate violently for such incidents. Some anti social elements are taking advantage of this fact. Sometimes it is out of jeleousy and sometimes just to create rift between religions. This is mainly done for political purposes and for vote bank. Majority of non christians are good hearted and peace loving. No religion teaches violence and hatred. A small percentage are motivated by some vested political interests to create unrest in the society for their gains. We pray to God to forgive them and show them what is right and what is wrong. At the end no one is benefited by such vandalism.

Also, our peace loving religion is based on peace, love & forgiveness - not hatred and violence. Mr. Digvijay Sigh had rightly predicted, when the election is nearing more religious riots will take place. But, if the cowards try to vandalize Christian worship places, they won't gain anything but curse and wrath of God. Mama Mary, forgive those cowards who have lost their senses. Praise the Lord.
