Mukka residents protest over land acquisition by highway officials

Mangalore, Oct 17: Residents of Mukka near Suratkal held a protest rally on Thursday October 17 against the 'high-handedness' of national highway officials who they allege are forcing people to vacate their premises for road-widening work.

Mahabala Rai, president of a committee fighting for rights of people who may lose their lands to the highway widening project, addressed the protest and demanded an explanation for acquiring additional land by demolishing 38 houses to construct 60-meter wide road when 43-49 meter wide road necessary for the work already exists. He condemned the authority which he said is trying to demolish places of worship, commercial buildings and houses without answering questions of the people.

“Let the authority explain who is putting pressure on them to shift the middle line to the east in the name of road widening. The letters written to the minister and the MLA in this regard have remained unanswered,” he said.

“This is a protest against a systematic conspiracy of constructing a toll gate near NITK and making the people of Mukka scapegoats.  If the work continues, a full-fledged protest will be inevitable,” he warned.

The protesters blocked the highway for a few minutes and held a protest march from Haleangady Pavanje to NITK.  It was announced that a petition will be sent to the deputy commissioner. Suratkal police deployed tight security at the spot.

Sadananda Holla, Sadashiva G Amin, Aboobacker, Usman, Nazir, Yashodhar Bangera, M G Ramachandra Rao, Beeranna Shetty, Monappa Kunder, Harish Aithal, Devendra Poojary Bhandaramane, Sailesh, Govinda Poojary, Girish Suvarna, Hoovayya Shetty, Yogish, Srinivasa Rao Kapil, Jagadish Shetty, Vachan Manay, Ravindra Suvarna and others were present.

Affected people have every right to show their frustration, as long as it is peaceful. In this scene, it looks very peaceful. Congrats to the organisers. It is a pity that the officials, do not consult the people concerned and take them into confidence before venturing into projects. In this case, if their ancesteral homes have to be demolished, they should be given suitable land as close as possible to the existing land with sufficient amount of money to construct new houses. Officials should not use high handed methods and threats. The usual strategy of the officials is to break the unity of the people by taking some important people and if necessary offer them good land and good amount of money. Once the unity is broken, the officials work becomes much easier.

    People complain about roads.
Once the Government takes up road widening efficient facilitation for transportation, the nearby residents are not allowing to widen the roads.

Secondly, the government should pay sufficient and efficient money for the residents for giving their land for road widening. Even after providing sufficient and efficient money to the residents and the residents are not vacating their premises then the fault is upon the residents not with the government.

If the government is not paying sufficient and efficient money then the fault is with the government.

Both should be done peacefully and instantly without any protesting and demonstrations.

    Joseph,

They are not protesting for compensation(Compensation is less than 10 percent than market price).

They protest because in their area land acquired is 60 Meters Wide and in Kerala and other parts its 45 Meters.

They want it 45 meters so their old buildings could be saved.

They want to be treated like others that's all.

They also allege instead of treating current center of road as benchmark and expanding both sides equally,,, some morons in Transport Ministry (for reasons best known to them///Mota Maal) are taking more land in East side to save buildings in West(Coast Side)...

Joseph, why don't you talk to "Punya Koti"(Highway Minister Oscar) about this and Solve this to the satisfaction of all???
