Jilted lover forces girl to drink acid

Mumbai, Oct 20 (PTI) : A spurned lover allegedly tried to force his 17-year-old ex-girlfriend to consume acid in suburban Borivali, police said today.

The girl sustained injuries on her face, lips and tongue and is admitted in a private hospital here, they said.

The accused, Jitendra Sakpal (21), who has done a hotel management course, was arrested on charge of attempt to murder yesterday.

According to Gorai police, Sakpal and the girl, both residents of suburban Dahisar, were in a relationship but parted ways a few months back after the girl's parents disapproved of their relationship. Sakpal had also proposed to marry her.

After repeated requests, the girl met Sakpal yesterday and the duo went to Gorai Jetty where an argument broke out.

"The accused then forced her to consume acid. She raised an alarm when passersby caught Sakpal and handed him over to police," said a police official quoting the complaint filed by the victim.

The girl's father is a class IV employee in the city's civic body while the boy's father is employed with a private firm, police added.

    Nagesh Nayak,

Why are you upset ? You did you not convince the parents of the minor girl to approve marriage with the man instead ? No acid attack and no cribbing over NGOs not lending voice ? For sure the Gotra/Jati/Bari did not match hence the parents rejected the proposal. Could they not tell the boy to wait till the girl attains adulthood ?

Humane if you fight to eradicate these customs so that two consenting adults can marry. NGOs don't differentiate between religion or party that rules in voicing against brutalities. Its you who politicize each and every incident. Why did you not add Shakti Mills rape case then ? Was some other government ruling at that time ? Was there less voicing for nailing the culprits ?

Dear Mr. Shetty, I am surprised our Home Minister who was in a hurry to show his sympathy on Manipal rape case has either not heard about Sowjanya's rape and murder case or is in deep sleep. Now, neither he nor Mr. Siddhu is opening their mouth on this incident. With regards to protest on Sowjanya case by Women Associations or NGOs’ who visited Mangalore during Pub & Homestay attack, as I commented earlier, in India religion is above truth and justice. You have seen how the groups who were demanding justice have been silenced by powerful people along with Politicians and religious heads ? As long as we do not keep religion and politics aside, specially during injustice caused to our own people by powerful people, we can never get justice. Sowjanya's incident has proved that might is right. Just imagine how & why the police did not even question the accused named by victim's parents ? Why ??? Indeed, very much hurting and very sad. May God protect females born in poor families from the clutches of powerful, lusty wolves.

Sometimes it is very disgusting to read the monotonous type of comments! Whatever may be the type of crimes or whoever or wherever committed, people jump into start politicizing it according to their taste!

This is really gruesome offence against a girl. I hope that all Women Associations or NGOs’ will come forward to condemn the brutality, at least those who visited Mangalore during pub and home stay attack. Interestingly, those Associations and NGOs’ who condemned Pub and Home Stay Attack least bothered about Manipal Rape Case!!!

    Sachidanand,

Can you explain how Mangalore attacks and this incident is related ? Two individuals were in a relationship and parted. In this no third party is involved. What happened in Mangalore is a social issue because a certain section of the society did not approve what happens in a club or a rented Home.

I guess logical thinking to at-least some extent is expected by DW readers from a person so popularly commenting on the website.

Dear Lydia, now you want to apply the logic correct? Where was your conscience when rape happened in Manipal last year? Look at the crime happened against a helpless women, forget about the party involved. If any Association or NGOs’ really interested to provide justice to women, then they have to rush every time wherever there is a crime against women not just to Mangalore where they wanted to malign BJP Party. Why they were mum during Manipal Rape Case? Whole World knee bent on to condemn BD when one of the brother of Manipal rape accused appeared in their rally but same World kept quite when accused himself campaigned for Congress Party in Udupi/Kundapur region. Hope all our friends including you understand the logic now

    Sachidanand,

Why is it giving me vibes that you are anticipating rapes and then wait with d vocabulary to shoot at a the NGO's or Women's associations' ?

Gentleman, no matter who rapes nor which community a victim belongs, brutality against women is just one colour and it should never have happened. A rapist is punishable no matter to which organization he affiliates to.

NGO/Women's Associations voice out or not is secondary. Accusing these not to have lent their voice is equivalent to your supporting the accused, not the victim !
