Bantwal, Oct 21: Fr John Jossy Sequeira (32) from Uppinangady, serving in Shimoga diocese, was killed in a collision between a KSRTC bus and a car near Purlipady in Kalladka here on Monday October 21.

Fr Jossy's cousin Loveleena Vinitha D’Souza (21) was also killed in the accident. She was the daughter of Vincent D’Souza and Lucy Fernandes from Kakkepadavu belonging to Madanthyar parish. She was a final year engineering student of Vivekananda Engineering College, Puttur.

As per the information obtained, Fr Jossy Sequeira along with his cousin was travelling in a car from Uppinangady to Mother of God Church, Mogarnad to attend a relative's wedding. On the way, a KSRTC bus plying from Mangalore to Puttur rammed into their car.

Fr Jossy was the assistant parish priest in St Joseph Church, Sagar, Shimoga from two years. Prior to that he served as secretary in the Bishop's House, Shimoga for two years. Born on January 23, 1981, he was ordained to priesthood on April 4, 2010.

He was on his way to attend the nuptial mass of Roshan Fernandes, the driver of Shimoga Bishop’s House and his bride is from Sagar. It was a double marriage of Roshan and his brother Ronald whose bride is from Shimoga.

"He was a young and energetic priest of Shimoga. The incident is very tragic and sad. We have lost a very good priest. He was much loved by his people in the parish where he was serving," said Bishop Henry D’Souza, the administrator of Shimoga and bishop of Bellary.

According to Fr Duming Dias of Diocese of Shimoga "Fr John Jossy was a good and effective preacher; was a good resource person to train students."

Brother of Fr John Jossy Sequeira is Fr Vincent Sequeira who is a priest of the diocese of Mangalore and is the professor of scripture at St Joseph’s Inter-diocesan Seminary, Mangalore. The professors of the seminary and priests from Shimoga have reached the hospital to assist in any way possible.

Bantwal police have registered a case. The bus driver who sustained injuries has been admitted to a private hospital.

The mortal remains of the priest are placed in the mortuary of a private hospital in Mangalore.

On Tuesday October 22, the body will be taken to St Joseph’s Church, Sagar in Shimoga diocese where he was the assistant parish priest. At 3.30 pm, a Mass will be celebrated in Sagar Church for the repose of his soul.

After the Mass in Sagar the body will be brought to his native parish of Uppinangady and the mass and funeral would be held at Our Lady Virgin of the Poor Church, Uppinangady at 10.30 am on Wednesday October 23.

Both the Masses in Sagar as well as Uppinangady will be presided over by Dr Henry D’Souza, the Apostolic administrator of Shimoga and bishop of Bellary.

The funeral mass of Loveleena will be held on Tuesday of October 22 at 3.30 pm in Sacred Heart Church, Madanthyar.

RIP. Crashes like these remind you to 'always drive to the prevailing conditions of road, traffic, vehicle and weather', and to *always* wear your seatbelts. Ensure your tyres are correctly inflated so as to avoid overheating and to ensure best possible grip and handling you can often see 'maximum recommended' pressures given on a tyres sidewall.

God's plan is not our plan! May the departed souls rest in heavenly peace.
When we see of accidents like this our hearts bleed with sorrow, what can we do? We wish to put forward a challenge to the engineering students (Automobiles) of Vivekananda Engg College, Puttur,in particular, St Joseph College, Mangalore etc, for the sake of Loveleena, can we reduce the impact of the hit by (1) by breaking the steering rod into 2 or 3 parts, each part tucking into the other on collusion, thus reducing the impact on the driver's chest? (2) any alarm / warning on the dashboard of an approaching vehicle 100 yards ahead?

He had a dream to build beautiful Church in Sagar and there was a good understanding between Parish Priest and Fr.Jossy, really a very great loss to the Parishinoers of Sagar. Nearly 500 people gathered to condole at the last moment. Let us hope that God may give us a very good, dynamic, energetic and adjustable Asst. Parish Priest like Fr. Jossy. He was very fond of "Driving" and the same came to his end. Lets his soul RIP. Really we have lost a very good Priest.

The news article starts with " bus rammed car " ...I think its conveying the correct message . If we look at the 2 vehicles , the bus is on the correct side of the road , its the car drivers mistake !
Also looking at the damage to car , this much of damage is nothing great considering modern cars . Seat belts would have saved for sure .

    In prayers.
Thanks to the state govt for building wonderful roads- with great lighting-excellent standards and specifciations -thanks to the politicians /local authorities and the contractor for building clean roads.
Thanks to the driving fraternity- for their excellent road ethics -excellent driving standards and Road ethics-not for speeding-overtaking .
Taking poor innocent lives by the day.
    what is going on?
Is any one accountable?who is responsible for these young lives?
Our road sare the worst and most dangerous in the world and our driving is equally worst.no limit on speeding-overtaking since there is no system or fear?
this is what we will get.
do we need Britishers to come back to organize and manage ?
I think they were 100times better.
    when will we improve?

    Hi Divya London,
Mr Nanag Shetty has written a general comment, but to reply to that in this harsh way is not human. We all understand the loss of a great priest, no matter what religion they belong to, and I fully agree with Mr Shetty's view point that every driver must be a professional, caring for his own life and that of others.....this way we can minimise the deaths but can't completely prevent them...

"The loss of any life is a tragedy, but the death of a beloved young priest is an especially difficult loss to bear." Sudden death of Fr. Jossy and his relative Loveleena is so shattering bereavement is a pain deep in the heart. God who has embraced two young lives in His arms can only console their families and fill them with strength not to lose the hope and the dreams that their future might have brought.

By Thy resurrection from the dead, O Christ, death no longer hath dominion over those who die in holiness. So, we beseech Thee, give rest to Thy servants in Thy sanctuary and in Abraham's bosom. Grant it to those, who from Adam until now have adored Thee with purity, to our fathers and brothers, to our kinsmen and friends, to all who have lived by faith and passed on their road to Thee, by a thousand ways, and in all conditions, and make them worthy of the heavenly kingdom. I am thunderstruck and shocked to hear about my intimate classmate in the seminary, we studied and lived together throughout our 12yrs of formation. I and all my classmates lost a good friend. JJsequeira was highly talented guy. He was a good writer, dramatist, singer, composer, best preacher, sportsman, highly intellectual, voracious reader and above all a model young priest of the Church. We were competing in our seminary studies, and i was very happy to know that he scored 2nd rank in the overall studies. Now i just can't accept this cruelty of reality. I am just questioning God, ..... GOD WHY SO SOON ???? I think Jossy's untimely death is a great loss to Shimoga diocese, Karnataka and the Church on the whole. All my classmates take heart, dont cry. Let us be careful on the road, thats the lesson Jossy silently left before us, he has gone before us to pray for us all. Oh my God, i just can't imagine the cry and sorrow of his widow mother and two brothers. May strengthen them to accept the will of God. Good bye Jossy.....

Very sad indeed, two precious young lives. Destiny had its final say, looks so cruel. May their souls be taken to heavenly Jerusalem. Just within few minutes of the accident I saw the spot and bodies being taken out of that ill fated car. I was in another bus heading towards Mangalore. The co-passengers and I peeped out of the windows & were shell shocked and took our seats in total silence as we moved ahead not knowing who the victims were!! On every face I saw only sympathy and a sense of loss.

Dear Mr.Rohan Lobo, I was travelling in that ill fated bus. The car had come to the extreme right of the road trying to overtake another vehicle & rammed into the bus. Our bus driver tried to steer left, applied brakes for almost 100 meters & save the car but in vain. Please don't give some random verdict sitting in Dubai.

I still cannot believe that the Diocese of Shimoga has lost such an efficient, dynamic and fervent priest. I personally know him from last 13 years I had the opportunity to do ministry with him this April-May. He was such a good priest. There is no day I have even seen him without wearing cassock all the 24 hours he was ever ready for the Mission of Christ, whether it is morning or night. Working with him many times in summer camps I understood that he is very systematic and a gentle priest with his innocent smile. He was a priest of Principles. His regular fasting, skipping the breakfasts was really an inspiration to me and for all of us. How much ever tired he was, he never denied any one of his help. He was the best counsellor anda good guide too. His words still echo in my ears. If you could listen to his sermons that gushed forth from his life experiences, you could judge what sort of priest he is! He was so spiritual that everyday mornings, he was sincere in his prayers. Above all, he was such a simple priest, open minded and broad in his thinkings. I’m sure that the perpetual light shines upon him and he’s already in heaven. But the saddest part is that We miss him very much. I still wonder why God calls such good and sincere people so soon.
(One who accompanied with him was not his sister-in-law, but his cousin’s daughter- Laveena).

It is unfortunate for the Catholic Community to lose a young priest full of zeal and enthusiasm, an inspiration of today's generation...! a guide and mentor who lead the flock of Jesus Christ in right direction.. a need of time. But then it is In His Time, and His Will. Let us bow down for this verdict of Almighty! as we pray May his soul rest in peace, and also pray for the strength and courage that the Parish priest and the bereaving Parishioners of Sagar will bear this irreparable loss, especially when they are struggling hard to build a new church.

RIP to both Fr. Jossy and his sister in law. It is so shocking to know and to accept that a young and dynamic priest is so suddenly lost for us. He was very much energetic and enthusiastic. I can't believe and feel very much sorrowful to know this reality. My sincere condolences to his near and dear ones. Fr. Venus Colaco take courage. My condolences and prayers for all of you.
