Bangalore: Showers herald arrival of North East monsoon

Bangalore, Oct 22 (DHNS): Showers across the City on Monday heralded arrival of the North East monsoon this season. The rainfall will continue over the next few days and is not expected to be heavy in Bangalore.

On Monday, as on 8.30 pm, the City had received a rainfall of 3.4 mm in areas around Palace Road. In areas in the vicinity of Yelahanka and HAL, the rainfall measured was 21.6 mm, according to Met department officials. There were showers over coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka as well. According to the Meteorological department, on Monday, the South West monsoon had withdrawn from the state and the country paving way for the North East Monsoon to commence.

Over the next few days, heavy rains are expected in districts surrounding Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Chikkaballapur, Kolar, Mysore, Mandya, Kodagu Chamarajnagar and Ramanagar are among the districts that would receive heavy rainfall, department officials said.

A low pressure area in the south of Bay of Bengal on Sunday, was well marked on Monday and is expected to form a depression in the next 24 hours. In the next 48 hours, the rain will spread across northern Karnataka as well.

Mercury dips

The temperature on Sunday was 27.2 degrees in Bangalore and on Monday it had dipped to a maximum of 26 degrees during the day. The minimum temperature is 19 degrees. The temperature is two degrees below normal. In Bangalore, the rainfall expected this month was 170.6 mm. So far, the received rainfall was only 35.6 mm said Director in charge B Puttanna, IMD, Meteorological Centre, Bangalore. “But there are 10 more days remaining. We have to wait and see,” he said.

In south interior Karnataka, the expected rainfall for October to December is 209.5 mm. “We are expecting normal rainfall this time. There will be rain in all parts with isolated heavy showers in a few places,” he said.
