Harsh Vardhan named BJP's Delhi CM candidate

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Wednesday named former state health minister Harsh Vardhan as its Delhi chief ministerial (CM) candidate, despite state party chief Vijay Goel's claims.

The announcement came following a meeting of the BJP parliamentary board which was attended, among others, by party president Rajnath Singh and senior leader L.K. Advani.

Making the announcement at the Ashoka Road BJP office, Rajnath Singh said: "The central parliamentary board has unanimously decided to project Harsh Vardhan as the BJP's chief ministerial candidate for the Delhi elections."

He also said Goel met party leaders Sunday and consented to the decision.

Backing Harsh Vardhan, Advani said the decision to name him as Delhi's chief ministerial candidate was "unanimous".

"Harsh Vardhan is best amongst all and enjoys the confidence of the people of Delhi," said party leader Nitin Gadkari, also the Delhi election in-charge. Senior leaders Sushma Swaraj and Murli Manohar Joshi and ex-mayor Arti Mehra were also present.

BJP's prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi too congratulated Harsh Vardhan on micro-blogging site Twitter. "Congratulations to Harsh Vardhan on being named BJP's CM candidate for upcoming Delhi elections. My best wishes."

After the announcement, Harsh Vardhan offered sweets to Goel and the latter also greeted him.

Harsh Vardhan, an ENT specialist, enjoys wide party support and has a "clean image".

Speaking to reporters, Harsh Vardhan said he would rid the people of Delhi from Congress's misrule.

"I would like to assure the people of Delhi that with their blessings we will win the upcoming elections and free them from corrupt Congress's misrule - first in Delhi and then at the centre," he said.

Goel, who was pitching for the top post, said he was "not upset with the decision".

"There are times when certain decisions are not to your liking but I have never violated the party's discipline and the party as well as the workers have always loved and supported me," he told reporters.

"I was never upset with the party nor will I ever be in the future," he added.

The announcement ended days of speculation on Goel who was trying to project himself for the post. Media reports suggested Goel had threatened to resign from his post if Harsh Vardhan was projected as the chief minister - a charge refuted by Goel and senior party leaders.

Within moments of the announcement, party workers, especially Harsh Vardhan's supporters, erupted in joy and started bursting crackers and danced outside the party office.

Harsh Vardhan was elected from Krishna Nagar constituency in east Delhi for the first time in 1993 and went on to retain that seat in the 1998, 2003 and 2008 assembly elections.

Harsh Vardhan held portfolios of education, law and health minister in the BJP government in Delhi from 1993 to 1998. He is married to Nutan, a specialist in hospital administration. He has two sons and a daughter.

This the second time when BJP did not declare its unit chief as the chief minister candidate.

In 2008, though Harsh Vardhan was the party's state unit chief, it was senior leader V.K. Malhotra who was propped up as chief ministerial candidate, a move blamed for the party's defeat in the assembly polls. BJP has 24 seats in the 70-member assembly, while Congress has 43 seats.

Taking a dig at Harsh Vardhan, Aam Aadmi Party's leader Arvind Kejriwal asked whether the BJP’s chief ministerial candidate was the party's "Manmohan Singh in Delhi".

"Is Harsh Vardhan BJP's Manmohan Singh in Delhi? A corrupt Congress made Manmohan Singh its face at the centre. Manmohan failed to check corruption within the Congress and in his own government. A corrupt BJP has now made Harsh Vardhan its face in Delhi," tweeted Kejriwal.

"What did Harsh Vardhan do all these years to check BJP's corruption in municipal corporations," Kejriwal asked.

Polling in Delhi is scheduled Dec 4 and votes will be counted Dec 8.

    Onions
will defeat Congress in Delhi elections. Onions will ensure that Congress loose
deposits in all assembly seats and give BJP 70 seats on platter.

BJP Delhi Chief has again proved that its party first, self last. With his support and work, I am sure BJP will sweep a clear victory in the upcoming Delhi polls..

Hope, the ion of Dr is very good decision of BJP who is a clean and expect he will cure the decease of corruption in Delhi. Remember, Delhi's brave Girl was raped, Shiela Dixit announced that she cannot do anything for the safety of the Women as the Police is not under her. This is the response she has given. Hope, this time, Delhi will elect Dr as their CM .

We majority will vote for you doctor

Already BJP Delhi is in shambles failing to take advantage of the disenchantment of the people with Khangress and Sheela Dikshit, the price rise, the insecurity of women, the ever increasing street side and signal beggars, the stinking juggis and jompris so on and so forth. While AAP is seen everywhere in markets, visiting houses, whereas BJP is seen nowhere. I wish you make a concerted effort in naming the Chief Ministerial Candidate, and also visit Delhi as many time as possible take the government head on to win Delhi for BJP. Just campaigning for one day wouldn't suffice.

There are open nalas breeding mosquitoes recurring dengue, garbage disposal problems, lack of good quality vegetabls at good prices, no good quality water available for the city, still commuting places where Metro doesn't exist is arduous, please make a vision document and come across reach voters house by house make believe that your team in Delhi can resolve their issues and give a good governance, win Delhi take a road to 7 RCR. I think AAP should not be allowed to take away the anti upa anti khangress votes and it is time for Delhi BJP to bury all differences, visit each and every voter home to home campaign, run the campaign in such a way that make believe the people of Delhi that AAP has only one agenda to talk against corruption. They have never ruled anywhere and no prior administrative experience, they have no agenda for Delhi except but talking of corruption. Their CM Candidate how he managed to work in Delhi through his career without being transferred. It is time for BJP to stand united pump up the campaign and make their candidate Harshvardhan take over as CM of Delhi in December, which would pave for NAMO's anointment at 7 RCR.

Good , more acceptable face will bring more chances to BJP. Delhites have harsh "experience" for electing Sheila Dixit regime in past .Security scenario worsened and electing another Congress regime will be a disaster. AAP may be in high spirits as spoilers. Anyway situation will change as people are becoming angrier to UPA regime day by day

Bold Decision by BJP. He is a proven Administrator with solid Political experience. he is Mr.Clean. Respected across the society. hope everything works out well for him.

I am not surprised at all to see Congi media stooges hyping and supporting Congi B-Team AAP. Arvind Kejriwal is a vote cutter and splitter of anti-Congress votes to help Congress to defeat BJP in Delhi. AAP co-founder Yogendra Yadav was Raul Baba's close political advisor and remains a Durbari sycophant of the highest order. He once called Raul Baba as a most "bright and astute political leader", LOL! Madhu Purnima Kishwar had revealed these things last year. I do not find it at all surprising that AAP snake like Yogendra Yadav or Shazia Ilmi regularly come on TV news channels to bash Narendra Modi and BJP, while simultaneously going soft on Raul Baba (often even expressing gushing praise for the latter). Just see Yadav's sterling sycophantic "performance" from only last month itself: "... Rahul's good intentions have been let down by a weak party structure and a lack of concrete programmes to make any political capital out of it. ... It is not that any of his gestures such as visiting Dalit hamlets lack relevance now but there is no party organisation to coalesce it into programmes as a result of which whatever Rahul Gandhi says seems insincere, shallow and fragmentary. ... No matter what he says ..." LOL, even Pappu could not have articulated a better and more sympathetic defense of his meaningless nautanki activities than what his AAP slave did for him on national media! Pls vote only BJP and nobody else...
