Mangalore, Oct 23: Students of Karnataka Polytechnic College, under the banner of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) on Wednesday October 23 formed a human chain at KPT circle here, in protest against the increasing number of atrocities against women. The protest was held as part of the nationwide awareness campaign 'Students walk for protection of women' launched by ABVP.

Addressing the media, Ramesh K, state secretary of ABVP, said that ABVP has been fighting for justice in the Sowjanya rape and murder case reported in Beltangady last year. "We have been fighting for justice in this case since the beginning. Last year on October 12, just two days after Sowjanya was found murdered, we organazied a protest. Other parties too joined us later," he said.

He further said, “We are not only fighting for Sowjanya but also for Akshatha (who was found dead under mysterious circumstance last month), Manipal gang-rape case and for every other woman and youth in the society who has faced atrocity.”

"Why is that Communist Party and others are talking only of Sowjanya case and not about other brutalities done against women?" he questioned.

"Through this campaign we want to create awareness and put forth our demands in front of the government, political leaders and the public with regard to safety of women," he added.

“In the state, from 2009 to 2011,  there were 14,989 cases of missing women. Mysore district alone had witnessed 1,612 cases of missing women, into which no probe or enquire has been made till now. The police must take charge of these cases," they said.

The ABVP demanded fast track court to try crimes such as sexual harassment, acid attacks and any other violence against women; strict punishment for the culprits and stringent law enforcement; a separate committee with full authority to tackle rape cases; and that the identity and individuality of the victim should not be compromised.

Moreover, the protestors also demanded mobile companies to come up with a mobile application and free call services for women. Their other demands included complaint boxes in educational institutions and quick action on the complaints received; strict law against  female foeticide and dowry harassment; a committee to monitor and prohibit sexually explicit posters or pictures on social networking sites, and awareness programmes in educational institutes and on public platforms on issues related to women's safety.

The ABVP members informed that rally will be organized in the coming days in Beltangady, Vittal, Puttur, Subrahmanya, Sullia, Moodbidri, Udupi, Mangalore, Madikeri and other places.

Chethan Padil, district secretary of ABVP and others were present.

    Ismail K Perinje,

You siad: ABVPians lacking all three salient feature of civilized society!!!!

In this news I could see them for the right cause. You have any problem? Some friends of mine and relatives are in ABVP (incluidng muslim sisters) You mean they do not have Sheela? How do you know? Are you responsible for it?

This kind of attitude like you people is also dangerous. You have no right to say someone's sister as they do not have "Sheela" be careful in your comments.

Showing off as is they are so concerned about girls/women.
If they care, why don't they question beating privately partying girls in pubs or home stay?
Why don't they raise their voice against their Mother organization (sangh parivar outfits), who encourage beating of women in the name of religion? Why don't they have any problem with honouring of culprits who attacked women?

These students are brainwashed & misguided. They will realize the consequences of supporting Sangh PArivar outfit, when they get caught doing any anti social activities.
Guyz... you are young & teenage is so precious. It's time to concentrate on your studies & plan for your better future. Don't spoil it in the hands of selfish leaders.

Many groups and organisations affiliated to the RSS create as many issues as possible to remain more and more in the limelight before the Lok Sabha election. The Congress and its affiliated groups all over India should start the similar processions with smart issues at least once a week till the election. Expose the BJP in all mediums like internet, twitter, facebook, press-report and advertisements in TV, FM and newspaper by mass appealing personalities like Bachchan, Sachin and Khans.
And your time starts now because it is better late than never.

These protests and demonstrations are not going to help unless stringent law is in place to curb from smallest offences of eve-teasing to big crimes of rape and/or murder.

Again, all laws will only minimize the number of violence on women, but won't eliminate the crime completely.

Some Islamic countries, laws like harshest punishment are in place, but sexual assaults on women are still prevailing. Only difference the percentage of happenings in these countries is drastically less comparing to that those occurring in other Asian countries.

The best way is parents should take great initiative to educate their kids right from childhood the importance of being a good human. This is definitely going to help the society at the end.

    ABVP,first you yourself stop:

    -attacking women,
    -molesting women,
    -beating women,
    -manhandling women,
-stealing money & jacket of women,
    -targeting women,
All in the name of 'culture'

Your own rowdies are the best known for all these atrocities against women.

Get yourself educated on human rights and respect for women.

Then there will be law and order in the society.

The ABVP people who organized this event will also be there during the felicitation ceremony of the home stay attack. Just wait and watch. In a way, they follow Newton's laws of motion: 'For every action there is an equal opposite reaction'....in other words, they will molest women when given a chance, but will also demonstrate against molestation when given a chance...
