New Delhi, Mar 24: The controversy over office of profit on Thursday night claimed the parliamentary seat of senior Congress leader Karan Singh, who resigned from the Rajya Sabha, hours after party chief Sonia Gandhi's quitting from Lok Sabha and as chairperson of the National Advisory Council.
    
Karan Singh, accused by the Opposition for occupying an office of profit by being chairman of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, has sent his resignation letter, addressed to the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, to Gandhi.
    
Singh is also chairman of the Rajya Sabha's Ethics Committee that had recommended the expulsion of two members of the Upper House --Chhatrapal Singh Lodh for his involvement in cash-on-camera scam and Sakshi Maharaj for "misuse" of the MPLAD scheme.
    
Singh claimed the ICCR chairmanship is not an office of profit and the post had in the past been occupied by Atal Bihari Vajpayee and P V Narasimha Rao when they were external affairs ministers and by Najma Heptullah when she was the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
