Udupi: Vibrant celebrations mark Kannada Rajyotsava in district

Udupi, Nov 1: The 57th Kannada Rajyotsava was celebrated in a grand manner at Mahatma Gandhi Memorial College Grounds here on Friday November 1.

District incharge minister Vinay Kumar presided over the celebrations and received the guard of honour. A colourful march-past by 12 teams led by the district armed reserve force was held.

Addressing the gathering, Sorake stressed on the need to preserve, promote and implement Kannada language in schools. "Proficiency in Kannada can be a strong base for learning other languages. Mother tongue is the foundation for culture and society," he said.

He added that English and Hindi languages are needed to survive in society, as English is considered more than just a language. "We must get rid of the wrong notions and fears concerning the influence of English language. For this purpose, the government has planned to introduce English from first standard," he said.

The minister in his address listed the plans, schemes and grants provided by the state and the central governments to the district.
With the help of various aids the Brahmavar suger factory’s financial burden has been reduced and there are plans to utilize the funds in an appropriate way, he said.

For Nagaradhana second phase, Rs 45 crore has been set aside for Udupi, Karkala, Kundapur and Saligrama. UIDSSMT project for road, drainage was approved at Rs 153.8 crores.  Karnataka Urban Development and Coastal Environmental Management Project (Kudcemp) plan is ready for Udupi and Kundapur. Rs 100 crore has been alloted for the construction of Hejamady port.

Rs 60 crore has been sanctioned for Agumbe Ghat road expansion. The government has released Rs 3 crore to upgrade the fisheries roads in the district, he said.

He said Rs 42.56 crore has been allocated for the supply of drinking water facilities in the rural areas. Rs 1,013 lac is allotted
for the maintenance of rural roads. Rs 25.96 crore is kept aside for three villages in the district selected under Suvarna Gramodaya
Yojane. The process of identifying as many as 2,920 beneficiaries under Bavasa Vasati Yojane and 1368 beneficiaries under Indira Awaz Yojane is under way, he added.

Elaborating the plans to develop tourism, the minister said Rs 100 lac has been earmarked to develop “Hasthashilpa Kalagrama” in Manipal. A proposal worth Rs 2,390 lac has been submitted to the government  to develop seven roads in tourism spots, four beaches and eight tourism areas, he added.

As many as 17 achievers from different fields were honoured with district Rajyotsava awards.

A colourful cutural progrmme by students of various schools delighted the gathering.

MLA Pramod Madhwaraj, deputy commissioner Dr M T Reju and others were present.
