Marriage scheme to all religious minorities: Minister Qamar-ul-Islam

Gulbarga, Nov 2 (DHNS): Minister for Minorities Welfare Qamar-ul-Islam on Friday announced that the Bidaai scheme, popularly known as 'Shaadi Bhagya’ scheme, which aims to provide financial benefit to brides from poor Muslim families will be extended to all other religious minorities.

The minister told presspersons here that he has spoken to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on the matter and the chief minister has given consent to extend the scheme to all the religious minorities.

The scheme will be extended to poor women from other religious minorities such as Christians, Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs and Parsis and the conditions for getting the financial benefit will be same for all. The bride should have crossed the age of 18 and the groom 21 and, the annual income of the woman seeking the benefit should be less than Rs 1.5 lakh.  A budgetary allocation of Rs five crore has been made for the scheme and if the needed, it would be increased, the minister said.

Islam said that each district has been given a target in proportion to the population of the respective minorities as per the 2011 census. Though it was planned to limit the scheme to 1,000 persons every year, now it may be increased after extending the scheme it to all the religious minorities, he added.

The minister, however, tried to justify the scheme which is currently meant only for poor Muslim women saying that they don’t fit  into the existing schemes such as Thali Bhagya.

He said that he was not communalising the scheme but sought to help unmarried women from poor Muslim families as well as divorcees and widows intending to marry again. He made it clear that the financial benefit of Rs 50,000 would be a one-time assistance.

He accused the former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa of politicising the issue in the wake of the ensuing elections to the Lok Sabha. “Had there been any misgivings, Yeddyurappa could have spoken to me or any representative of the government instead of making it an issue and resorting to dharna,” Islam said.

Rightfully, this scheme should be for all the girls who are lower income category and not based on their religion.

It is not a good decision by the Govt to give this scheme on religion basis.

Politics has changed. Now it is not devepment plank of concern for poor and down troddens. Its purely corruption and communal politics.Sometimes somebody is deviding the communities and sometimes appeasing. Both aspects two factors are like two faces of same coin.To counter comunal poitics one has to explore the possibility of inventing some other factors either to appase or to devide the communities.BJPians now its your turn.....workout your stretegy for 2014 elections in advance.

If we are a true secular Country, any reservation or scheme should be based on economic criteria which benefits the poor people and not on the basis of religion or caste.

After marriage no Baccha Bhagya scheme? we have to overtake China in population count at least. It is unfortunate that we have such backward Ministers in Karnataka.

    Excellent comment Kumar !
Employment to unemployed youths in state should be on top priority rather coming up with non sense schemes. All educated youths to be absorbed in LOKAYUKTA to do surprise checks in government offices where nothing positive happens without greasing the hands of officials.

mass marriage of all community people at frequent interval at all taluka places can be arranged for people who can not afford & people who dont want to waste money & the remaining money can be utilized for improving facilities of government hospitals & schools.

please dont divide people based on caste. remember same blood flows in every human individual. a hindu or muslim or jain or christian can donate or accept blood from any other community human being !!! that shows we are all "same". dont you think we are fools fighting on stupid issues ??? why these stupid politicians divide us in the name of caste !!!! let the tax payers money spent on development /infrastructure/health/education/security not on freebbies....

This is just vote bank politics. I call all Christians to oppose this scheme. If there is any Christian family that cannot bear expenses of their daughter's marriage, let us rise and lend a helping hand instead of making them beg the Government. We have enough and more Education, Housing and Health funds at the Diocese and parish level, let us have a fund for this cause as well. It won't be a burden.

Make it an 'Economic Criteria' and not a 'Minority Criteria' and give mosquito coil, paan, fruits and the like also in the package...Brainless Lot!
Your schemes are only to make people laggards...See that they are crippled by offering things like these free...
If you can provide the best of education to all existing kids and improve nourishment levels-then it's something!
Don't offer something which will bring some more 'load' ON THE POPULATION FRONT. AS IT IS THE STATISTICS CONCERNING 'POPULATION AND MAL-NOURISHMENT FRONT' is frightening...Senseless Ministers...

This scheme should be extended to all the needy families irrespective of whether they are minorities or majorities. Making available the scheme to only a few on the basis of their religious belief sends wrong signal to majority community. It is high time for Siddu government to concentrate on the overall development state instead of engaging in minority appeasing politics. When the state is develpoed minoroties too prosper.
