NEW DELHI, Mar 28: The Indian government has sought from its mission in Dubai a full report on the March 21 incident in which hundreds of expatriate workers, including Indians, rioted in protest against low salaries and alleged mistreatment.
Official sources said the government is awaiting a reply from its consul-general to decide on the necessary action.
According to media reports, hundreds of Asian workers, including many Indians, rioted at Burj Dubai, the site of what is to become the world's tallest skyscraper, on March 21 to protest low salaries, mistreatment by their employers and poor working conditions.
The rioters broke into offices, smashed office equipment and chased security guards. The following day, other workers in an airport terminal in Dubai laid down their tools in protest. Work was also disrupted at the site on March 23 with the workers demanding a settlement.
The sources said that if the workers were indeed facing problems, the concerned recruitment agencies would be asked to work out a settlement between them and their employers.
Though Dubai does not allow labour unions, it has a reputation of having good labour laws, Indian officials said.
