Beltangady: Couple killed, 11 others injured in accident at Charmadi Ghat

Beltangady, Nov 4: A middle-aged couple died and 11 others were injured after an Eicher Jumbo goods truck went out of control and hit a protective wall on Charmadi Ghat, and then plunged into a gorge.

The deceased have been identified as Kanakaraj (49) and his wife Chikkamma (46), hailing from Hassan and residing at Kengunta, Mallathahalli in Bangalore.

The couple's son Chetan, daughter-in-law Kavita, grandson Prajwal, Yashodhamma, Latha, Umesh, Aruna, Renuka, Govindraj who was driving, and two children sustained injuries.

The families of Kanakaraj and Govindraj were on their way to Dharmasthala from Bangalore on Saturday November 2 when the accident took place. Govindraj is said to have lost control of the truck at the 5th curve on the Ghat section and hit a protective wall. The impact was such that the truck rolled off the road and plunged into a the gorge.

The injured were admitted to various hospitals.

Beltangady police have registered a case, based on a complaint by Chetan.
