Mangalore, Nov 5: The members of Rama Sene led by their chief Prasad Attavar on Monday November 4 night staged a protest at KSRTC bus stand against the government bus service for charging more during the festive season.

The KSRTC, during festive occasions like Diwali and Christmas, introduces more buses on popular routes like Mangalore-Bangalore to meet the high demand, and charges 25 percent more or sometimes even double the normal rates.

The protestors started their agitation inside the bus stand, however, Barke police soon intervened and drove them out.

Addressing the media, Prasad Attavar said, "KSRTC is a government enterprise and hence it has to serve the people and be in favour of public. It has increased the number of buses especially to Bangalore to ensure that people can travel smoothly without any problem, but with the increase of the buses it has also increased the fares. It will do this again during Christmas."

"On receiving several complaints from the public, Rama Sene decided to act and hence we have staged this  protest," he said.

A memorandum was also submitted to KSRTC urging not to increase the fares during festive season.

"If the KSRTC continues to charge more in future also, we will intensify our protest," he warned.

Speaking to daijiworld, Padmanabh, a local said, "My daughter is working in Bangallore and she has come to Mangalore for the festival. When she came from there, the KSRTC bus fare was Rs 450, but now when she is going back, the fare is Rs 800. Is the government not ashamed of imposing such exorbitant prices? How can a common man afford it?"

If they are so much bothered about the people, why haven't they protested in front of private bus operators when they charged high rates at the time of festivals or even during peak like April-May etc.... Clearly looks a case of no hafta given to them.. Bombay-Mangalore tickets in April-May is around 2000-2500 for Volvo buses... normally it is around 800-1000 .

KSRTC is taking a leaf out of the airlines book. At least the airlines have DGCA to submit fares in advance and answer to and the Competition Commission of India to investigate and regulate. However, charging 450 in one direction and 800 in the other is plain collusion by KSRTC with the private operators who charge as per their whim and fleece in the holiday season when demand is high. Seems it is time to have a regulatory body for bus fares too.

One day or the other somebody was expected to raise this issue. Let there be no bias just because a communal organisation has raised their voice against raising bus fares during festival season. There has to be an end to this unjust practice of raising fares during festivals and school holidays, which indeed puts a great burden on middle and low income travelers.

Purpose all same with jobless chelas ! You can understand this with self experience comments from Mr. Hari Ram, Mangalore.
Everybody wants to grab the opportuniity when it comes to them ! When the time of unseason for them they are running in loss, this is the time to them to recover the loss. That's it. Everybody atleast should thanks the KSRTC for providing extra bus service at the time of required. Whitout extra service how can everybody join their respective family / friends in festival time.

The private bus operators will charge almost double on festival season, Also they charge 100 rs extra on weekends.

Rama sene has a valid reason to fight. But why they are biased. If they can protest for raising 25 rs by KSRTC, why cant they protest for raising the price almost double.

I was there at KSRTC bus station at beai around 9.00 pm. The havoc created by Rama Sena is disgusting.

All passengers were in utter dismay and helpless. The Ram Sena of 40 to 50 people have hijacked the operation of the bus services for more than half an hour. Police were just mute and watching the entire situation as if they were not given strict order to stop this non sense and seems to be helpless.

Being this is a festive season, KSRTC have increased bus fare for the special buses only, which might have taken the SHARE of business of private buses.

I have asked few of them, how much increase the fare. One of them told, increase of Rs. 25 per seat extra. When the buses does the return trip, they have to come almost empty and who is going to compensate this loss?

If this continues, the Investors in Coastal Karnataka may move to other safer areas and the local youth might be deprived of jobs and the youths have to move to others parts for jobs.

This type of movement should not be allowed.

Even private operators hike bus fares during peak season from very long time. Ramsene sees no problem there. Private or public it is not fair to fleece the people. All concerned should come together and struggle for direct trains to Mangalore where as Bangalore -Chennai has 7to 8 trains fast too for the same distance.

    Dear Alwyn,
Maybe for you, living in that cold country of Canada, all the prices of goods and services are "frozen" and stay the same throughout the year. But here, in hot, humid India, prices of everything going up like the unbearable temperature!

Rama Sena have a genuine reason to take this issue up. But my only problem is, why are they targeting only the govt service buses and not the private bus operators who are also charging exhorbitant amounts during the festive season? There must be an agenda by Rama Sena (probably have got some money) in not targeting even private bus operators.
