Bangalore: Techie arrested for raping wife's 14-year-old niece for two years

Bangalore, Nov 6 (DHNS): A software engineer was arrested on Tuesday on a charge of raping his 14-year-old relative for the last two years, police said. The arrest was made after his wife filed a complaint against him.

Ashwin Tambrekar, 35, who works with Pronto Network in Bilekahalli, first raped the girl two years ago when his wife, Tumpa, was in Mumbai, police added.

The girl is Tumpa’s niece whom she had brought to her home in Omkar Nagar Layout, Hulimavu, with a promise of a better life.

In the complaint, Tumpa alleged that her husband had threatened to “kick the girl out of the house” if she disclosed the matter to her. Hence, the victim kept quiet, Tumpa added.

One-and-a-half-years ago, Tumpa further said, she had gone to Kolkata as she was pregnant. She, however, left her niece to the care of Ashwin.

After her return, she discovered that her husband had sexually assaulted the girl, Tumpa said in the complaint.

Demanding answers, she picked a quarrel with Ashwin and strictly told him to stay away from her niece. But the suspect allegedly did not mend his ways and continued to molest the girl, leading to frequent quarrels between the husband and wife, police said.

According to Tumpa, things came to a head on Sunday when Ashwin again sexually assaulted her niece who was looking after the couple’s one-and-a-half-year old daughter that day. Tumpa was not at home at that time.

But she returned in time to catch her husband “in the act.” She again quarrelled with the suspect and demanded that he buy her and the victim train tickets to Kolkata. She said she would go away to never return to him, police said.

But Ashwin is said to have refused to buy the tickets and the couple fought again. As the situation became “irremediable,” Tumpa approached the police and lodged a complaint. Ashwin was later subjected to medical examination at the Victoria Hospital and arrested.

Tumpa belongs to a family of labourers from Hooghly district of West Bengal. She worked as a bar dancer in Mumbai where Ashwin fell for her and the couple got married in 2006. The suspect was looking for a job in that city after graduating in engineering from Bhopal.

The couple moved to Bangalore after Ashwin landed a job here.

But, Tumpa told the police, she could not adapt herself to the City and wanted to return to Mumbai but Ashwin didn’t agree. Nevertheless, she would go to Mumbai once in a while and stay there for a week.

Rape is in fashion nowadays....If we have to stop it, severe punishments to be brought into practice....Punishments has to be given in public so that everybody see that and think ten times before commiting crime like Rape....

Readers please do not get offended....I very well understand the situation, but not to be forgotten that our daily leisure activities in public, our dressings, our behaviour in public all be counted to these kinds of incidents. Yes I truly understand that we are citizens of a Independent country but at the same time our independence should not be a poison to our lives. We have to be careful of all above. Sorry if I have written anything wrong but it is truth....please go to some places where youngsters meet and you will get the answer. Meeting or enjoying is not wrong but everything should be at its own respect.

Problem here is to avoid the atrocities against women and above is only a Idea not a suggestion coz I really feel bad when I read all this against women.

Man, by instinct, is polygamous by nature - he looks for one "thing" in many women!

Women are (usually) monogamous by nature - they look for many things in one man. Example: (money, social status, successful career, sensitive nature, family-oriented, religious, strong, tall, handsome, loving, kind, caring, non-smoker, teetotaler, non-gambler, not looking at other girls, and other bla, blahs...)

@Lydia lobo , kadri. Age of consent for married girls in India is 16 ( crpc 2013 ) . Even if they married or even unmarried girl less than 16 engages in intimacy , in much of cases court acquitted the rape charges upon the consent of the girl.Do u know in the Indian state of Manipur its 14 ??/ This is only India , even in neighbor countries like Brunei its lowest at 12 .

I strongly disagree with most comments by Lydia Lobo , kadri. It depicts misandry to the highest level. What age difference got to do with any relationship. Marrying twice or thrice is left to individual choice . It's definitely not immoral but choice. Yes , a girl can very well fall for men twice or even thrice their age!.

Do not compare with the daughters, the relation between daughter and niece (niece from wife’s side i.e. wife’s sister’s/brother’s daughter) not the similar to any men, for your kind information men do not have lust with their daughters except few animal nature men. What I commented in my previous comment it is my opinion. You cannot trust few men unless and until the situation comes. The rapist’s wife does not know her husband good or bad till this incident happened and you also doesn’t know till it happens, and I use the word petrol and fire, he is a FIRE that’s what petrol got fired, that is why I use the phrase Quote “ PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE” UNQUOTE I hope you will understand.

Despite modern education, a person's thoughts relies 90% on his/her religious affiliation. In mine a second generation member from either side is equivalent to a child. Neither marriage nor intimacy is permissible.

In civil terms, one has to be married to a person to be intimately involved. Legality applied, until a girl is 18, with or without permission of the girl, physical relationship with her is a rape.

You keep to your belief and let the law deal with the matter.

Many of us know that raising a child, that too the first born, is not an easy task - parents must be a child like it and do all play games it does to help it grow. In the case of a second child, the older sibling plays an important role.

Grand parents help a great deal because they have less worries and least responsibilities. In the absence of grandparents, it is usual to be aided by a cousin of the child, in most cases a female.

If all were to have done in the manner this Techie has done, I am sure there would have been a war among families by now.

    Rudolf,

There is a social taboo no matter what sort background a male/female comes from. Nobody approves physical relationship with another woman while he has a wife. There could have been a minor leniency
if the wife had deserted him or was bid-ridden !

Social practices apply to all - be it a labor or a tycoon !

@Lydia, beg to differ, you are just talking about an "ideal situation/ideal family", but the various situations (money, power, property, sexual debility, sometimes dubious religious compulsions, etc.) one falls in can lead to various permutations and combinations of human behavior depending on the situation the individual/group is in with their background justifying their acts!!

Either you are not exposed to the outside world on how it is today or acting naive!!

Jealous wife , it can be a very well planned conspiracy by her to settle scores . Even if it's true , the girl is equally a part of it . She is not a child ( passed the age of puberty ). Man has been prosecuted just because the laws say so , he should have shown some wisdom by getting married to this girl secretly before any intimacy , there are clauses which shield the prosecution if the minor girl is married .

Is it just because the girls is her niece, not daughter, that she should not have kept the girl in the house while there is a man in the house ?

Will his child not grow to 14 years age or even younger ? What guarantee is there that he will not rape the child too ? Does that mean the wife must be attentive 365/24/7 to guard her child from the father ? How come you find the fault with the woman while what the man did was not every man on this earth does ?

    Rudolf,

There are a few men on earth who stand against all odds and marry women associated with bar-dancing or even prostitutes. Such men normally are trend setters, who hold women at high respect. They tend to be so bold that they don't care who says what about the past of their life partner.

My opinion today falsified by this ogre who may have been a frequent visitor to flesh trade areas and viewed all women in same perspective.

I disagree with your point that her visiting Mumbai/Calcutta frequently is questionable because if she was of cheap motives as his, she would have supported his torture than risking her marriage and deciding to leave him.

I am shocked - rather shattered. Are these cases increased now or were they always there but hushed-off as it brought dishonor to the family ? Dishonor to the rest of the family but what about the victim ? How many may have suffered the torture silently ?

Are they emerging to the open since Delhi-Gang-Rape, as that awareness is increased ? Are our girls/women coming out of the cage called family honor ?

Thank God there are men who still care for women as are our father and brothers do ! I pity the victim and all others who suffered sexual harassment.

Awareness, more awareness and especially severe punishment is what is required. If we let go the man for carrying it out once, he may go on doing it several times more !
