Congress govt caught in row over marriage scheme for minority women

V S Karnic

Bangalore, Nov 8 (IANS): Karnataka's Congress government is caught up in a row over a scheme to financially aid poor women among minorities when they marry. The opposition has slammed it 'vote bank politics' ahead of the general elections and wants it extended to all the communities.

The government of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has to partially blame itself for the mess as it first gave the impression that the scheme "Bidai" (Urdu for farewell) or "Shaadi Bhagya" was meant only for poor Muslim women. His clarification that the scheme was meant for poor women from all minority communities has not satisfied the opposition, particularly the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) led by former BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa.

Under the scheme, women whose family income is below Rs.150,000 a year will get either Rs.50,000 in cash or articles like cots and almirah. The bride should be 18 years and above and the groom at least 21 years. Divorcees getting remarried will also get the benefit.

Though Siddaramaiah announced the scheme in his budget presented in July, details were finalized and made public only late last month.

Accusing the government of 'minority appeasement' ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP, the Janata Dal-Secular and KJP are insisting that the scheme be extended to the poor among all communities.

Of the three opposition parties, Yeddyurappa has taken an aggressive stand, launching a 'dharna' (sit in) Oct 31 in the heart of the city till the government extends the scheme to all communities.

This has prompted the BJP to hold public protests. One was organized in Bangalore Wednesday. It plans to intensify the agitation after Nov 17 when it will hold a rally to be addressed by its prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi.

The JD-S has not announced any public protest though party leader and former chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has rubbished the scheme as a waste of public money.

The government is also facing flak over the amount earmarked for it for the current financial year - just Rs.5 crore - which will help only 1,000 women.

Yeddyurappa has also threatened to continue the protests in Belgaum in north Karnataka from Nov 25 as the state legislature will hold its winter session in that city from that day.

He and the BJP plan to raise the issue in the legislature.

In spite of growing demand to extend the scheme to the poor women of all communities, Siddaramaiah has so far refused to budge.

He has dismissed Yeddyurappa's 'dharna' as a "gimmick" and sought to counter the opposition attack by asking why they did not protest when he announced the scheme in the budget in July.

Though in no mood to yield to the opposition, the chief minister has kept the option of extending the scheme to all in due course.

"We will consider extending the scheme to poorer sections from all communities," Siddaramaiah said at a public meeting near Mysore Wednesday.

dude answer one simple question, why do you think people still trust that party and have been elected to power since last 60 years, either you say all 1.2 billion indians are dumb or they think it is the only party which has the credibility of being a national party with secular ideology, rest of them have either communal or regional agenda...

Anyone does good , always objections and criticism are more. When BJP was in power they had a real opportunity to do all these good works but they were only busier in self development than the society. Now, when the present government has taken bold steps to initiate reforms touching the common men they object. But good intentions always prevail over the bad and I hope none can stop the good work of the present government. All the best.Thanq.

Actually his claim is totally fault. Government never pay salary to the Poojaris. The income and expense of the temples need to be provided to Mujarai time to time.
Salary to the poojaris is determined by the temple managing committees.

Being pujari in a temple is not a government unlike how it is portrayed falsely. Has he been managing trustee of a temple?

Contribution to temples/matt help them to improve existing infrastructure to support devotees, beneficiaries, institutions. They don't misuse funds like some people do for anti-social activities.

Siddu is caught in a row not only marriage scheme for minority women, the same wind blows against his new brain child anti-superstition law to be introduced. It appears that though the people have thrown out the previous BJP govt for rampant corruption and given a chance for Congress with hopes but indications are that Siddu has thrown to the winds the trust of the people. This govt is totally dead now.In Mangalore though the people have voted Congress overwhelmingly, even after 9 Months the Mayor's seat is vacant there.Election manager Mr.Poojary is also not responding. Now for the people of Kudla the situation is "Anatho daiva rakshhaka"What a kind of irresponsible!!! Siddu has not yet applied his mind for appointment of Chiefs for various Corporations which shown that he has lost control over the party rank and file.People cannot hope for any betterment till 2014 elections. His new bill on anti superstition will receive heavy opposition within his own party people. This is sure.

The marriage scheme and the anti superstition bill will NOT BE IMPLEMENTED IN ITS QRIGINAL FORM.There are people within the Congress party who are opposing Siddu's ill conceived ideas on sensitive matters and more particularly concerning majority community. This government is voted to power by majority community which Siddu needs to be underlined.Let him banning certain things like black magic etc., but Hindu community is prone to progressive thing over the years.Hafe bakeds stop rejoicing over the issue and stop commenting indiscriminately.

36000 Temples come under Govt Muzrai Departments and they are contributing to Govt from the revenue generated in temples. None of the churches/Masjids are under Muzrai.

30% of the educational institutions in the state are owned by Matts and temples. Nothing wrong if Govt gives contribution to them. After all it is their money only.

The government is also paying salaries to the temple management, the Pujaaries of the temple and to Govt Muzrai Departments out of the temple money earned from the devotees.

Many of the temple's poojaries are told to put the money to their own boxes and not government maintained boxes. This is a well known fact to everybody.

He announced KANAKA JAYANNTHI as a public holiday to remember a philosopher, saint of the 16th century. The same reason for Valmiki Jayanthi. All were notable persons in the history of Karnataka/India.

But what your congis did? Free Haj trips, free loans for minority, free education for particular caste/religion, naming all roads, airports, bustands, railway stations with NEHRU Family etc etc... Improve your knowledge man. Don't simply do blah... Blah...
