Karkala, Nov 9: The residents of Belman have expressed anguish at the RNS company for its careless attitude towards work which they said affected other vehicles and commuters using the road. They blamed the company for the accidents that have occurred on this stretch road.

On Thursday November 7, Nandalike Laxmi Janardhan temple priest Madhusoodhan Bhat and his wife Shruthi were injured and their child died when the company’s road roller was suddenly driven in the reverse direction running over their bike.

The locals, shocked and annoyed with the incident, assembled at the Belman panchayat office on Friday November 8 and insisted that the company make good the loss as it was responsible for the accident.  They said that the lack of road signs and proper access road for free flow of traffic by the company, while the road work is in progress, has increased accidents.

They said that the RNS company had shown indifference by not visiting the aggrieved Madhusoodhan Bhat’s family.  They urged that they visit them.

K S Sanjeeva Shetty, project manager of RNS company, spoke and apologized for the death of the child.

The locals demanded sign boards on the road where the work is in progress. They also said that the speed of express buses plying on Belman road, should be curtailed and large vehicles should ply slowly giving way to smaller vehicles.

Their other demands were to conduct work on a stretch of 2 km of road at a time and complete the work as soon as possible, the workers should be instructed about safety precautions and to assign workers in the front and at the back of drivers of the road rollers.

Zilla panchayat members Suprith Shetty, taluk panchayat members Xavier D’ Mello, Karkala rural police inspector Mahadev Shetty, Panchayat development official Shekar Nayak, N M Hegde, Tukaram Shetty, businessman Shashidhar Shetty, Shodhan Shetty, Rotary organization president Suryakanth Shetty, Jaycee president Raghunath Nayak Punar, JDS spokesperson Deepak Kamath, V K Rao Nandalike, L Seetharam Bhat, Grama panchayat president Shanker Kunder and others were present.

How fast can a road roller move ? The Temple Priest must have been over speeding. If not this accident could not have taken place. Do not simply blame the road contractor.

The road was under construction and not opened to the public / vehicles. How did the Temple Priest get there ? The Temple priest was negligent and action should be taken against him.

Road Roller, a slow moving vehicle involved in the accident is really ridiculous and clearly indicates the negligence of the driver driving the road roller. Hope the enquiry in the matter will clear this issue and the contractors take the right corrective action in this regard.Thanq.

This protest may be encouraged by local contractors who missed out bagging contract against RNS..Karkala- padubidri is small stretch whilst comparison to other projects completed by RNS..at least 50% Expressway between pune to hubli on NH-4 ,was completed by RNS.our drivers should have some patience while work is going on in a narrow stretch of this route..

Locals demand is justifiable, area of repair should be blocked with the boundary of rope &sign boards so there is no access for any other vehicle near to it.Also enough workers to monitor vehicle movement particularly when the repair works on the wrong side of traffic route...Its hurting to hear that Officials didn't visit victims to console for their loss!

If you look at their signed Agreement Copy, I am sure all safety measures might have been clearly written to be followed strictly by all Contractors while on work. But almost all Contractors quote preliminary amount in Tender price on safety measures but compromise on safety steps at work site to save some money or lack of knowledge. Make this Company responsible for such accident, punish the concerned person who is in charge of Site and make them pay compensation for the human loss so that no one is daring to compromise on safety issue
