Aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya to be based in Karwar

Kochi, Nov 12 (PTI):
The country's second aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, being commissioned in Russia on November 16, will be stationed at the Karwar Naval base in Karnataka, a top Navy officer today said.

The 44,570-tonne warship, formerly known as Admiral Gorskhov, is being commissioned into Navy by Defence Minister A K Antony after which it would be brought to Karwar, Vice-Admiral Shekhar Sinha, Flag Officer Commanding in Chief of Western Naval Command, said.

The ship will take a month to reach India.

With the commissioning of Vikramaditya, Navy's reach and ability to respond in real time to developing situations in our area of responsibility would see a quantum leap, Sinha told reporters in a brief interaction after commissioning the first ALH (Dhruv) squadron here.

There has been huge cost overalls and delay in the delivery of the ship, whose repair and refitting work began in April 2004.

The ALH will be used for coastal security and maritime patrolling besides search and rescue, he said.

India had launched its first indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant in August, thus joining the elite club of nations with the capability of designing and building a warship of this size and capability.

The ship is expected to be ready for trials in 2016 and is likely to be inducted into Navy by 2018.

It is a good development, unlike a few unfortunately readers that this is a waste of money and time. Please understand that aircraft carriers are a must for a country like us, while being surrounded countries like Pakistan and China. Owning aircraft carriers make deployment of fighter aircraft at a faster pace. Because aircraft carriers can be taken anywhere within (even beyond if required) our waters and International waters and our planes can go bombard and come back and land on these safely. Because every fighter plane has its own flying distance capacity as well.
Again the government wouldn’t be dumb (including the BJP or Congress or any other) to buy a total waste of an aircraft carrier. Governments work on the basis of a lot of advisors who look at the feasibility and the worthiness of such a huge defense deal. So the only factor is that this deal has been delivered late and became expensive for our country.
Also another development I must appreciate is that our country’s capability to build our own aircraft carrier. But no more delays please. Not at least like the Tejas. It is already flying very very late.
As for a few readers who have questioned the need of an aircraft carrier, yes we have to have many more. We need at least two more.

    Thanks Dr. Anil Shetty.

I got some basic idea and the reality about this Aircraft carrier.

Since Mangalore is expanding (both domestically and internationally) I think we are heading in a right direction in maintaining basic security needs.

    Something is better than nothing.

I hope this Aircraft carrier will provide expected services in the future unlike the recent Russian-built, diesel-powered INS Sindhurakshak Submarine disaster.

This 'Doddanna's Comment shows his absolute lack of knowledge and facts, due to his ignorance and obvious bias he has made comments which totally expose his lack of understanding and wish to score political brownie points on a issue as serious as the defense of this country. The agreement for this Aircraft carrier was signed on January 20, 2004 when the NDA was in power and Vajpayee was the Prime Minister. Second the Aircraft is not British but from Russia (Admiral Goroshkov).Third, this ship was built in 1987, which is not old for an aircraft carrier, The USS Eisenhower which is a carrier in the US Navy and still in service was commissioned in 1977. An Aircraft carrier is an invaluable force multiplier and its acquisition should not be subject to falsehoods and innuendos by people with ulterior motives.

It is strange and funny, in this advanced period, why govt interested to spend behind old and scrap war ship. Seems every one from outsiders ( British) and our own brothers are totally looting our property.
    Shame on us.
If rss comes to power all the key position the national defense dept definitely they will take and divert the required amount to their side example our previous BJP govt.

Why we should be proud? Do we know what is the maintenance charge of such aircraft carriers while it is not being used for anything. Dont we feel secure even without these kind of ships? This is one more burden to taxpayers.

Mr.Gilbert Pinto, Muscut : By the time the Aircraft Carrier is inducted into the Indian Navy ( or arrives into Indian waters ) in 2018, it would be obsolete and due for scrap ! So why congratulate A.K.Antony ? It was scrapped by the Russians. The cost overrun has been magnificent and the Govt. of India was ultimately held to ransom. Please find out the initial price ( earlier it was said to be free ) and what we have actually paid, including training of Naval staff for years / modernisation / repairs / new fittings / aircraft purchase for it ?
