Karkala: Lady doctor loses Rs 11.35 lac in online marriage proposal fraud

Karkala, Nov 13: An Ayurvedic lady doctor, resident near Gandhi maidan in Karkala has lost Rs 11,35,000 in an online fraud.
The victim is identified as K Lavanya Rao(41), daughter of Nagesh Rao. Being unmarried, she put her profile in March this year on Kannada Bharath Matrimony website. In reply, a man named Ajmal put forward his marriage proposal on May 5, 2013.
Dr Lavanya Rao spoke to Ajmal over the internet and the latter won her confidence.
It is alleged that Ajmal cheated Dr Rao saying that his father had passed away and he was supposed to get funds from the Qatar government but needed money to claim it. He requested Dr Rao to send the money to claim his dues.
Dr Rao who believed him, remitted money to the various bank accounts held by Ajmal in New Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Noida, Bagalpur, Lucknow etc totally amounting to Rs 11,35,000. He then ordered her to send more money and threatened over the internet to kill her.
Dr Lavanya has lodged a complaint with the local police station and the police have lodged a case under the IT Act 2008. Further investigation is on.
