Mangalore, Apr 5: Live bands in the district have been a nuisance for long both for the public as well as the administration.  But the pity is that none of them could do anything, as there was no much space for it in the existing law.  Anyone could start a live band without having secured any valid license for the same.

That is why there are 13 live bands in the district right now.  While 5 of them are within the city, rest of them are operating from Suratkal, Tokkottu, Ullal and Bajpe areas.  Recently the High Court has given permission to open two more live bands in the city.

However, now the district administration is pondering to promulgate law to regulate these live bands.  So it is proposed to regulate the operation of live bands through an enactment under the Karnataka Police Act.  Already a draft notification has been prepared and published in the official Gazette dated March 23, 2006.

As per the procedures laid out in the Karnataka Police Act, 30 days time has been alotted for any objections to be raised from the public in this regard.  So the interested parties could send their suggestion directly to the District Magistrate on or before April 22, 2006.

This enactment is being done on the lines of similar order passed by Police Commissioner, Bangalore city to regulate the live bands of Bangalore.
