34 singers gear up for 'Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Inter-Parish Contest'

Mangalore, Nov 16: As the curtain will be raised on Sunday November 17, young, aspiring, talented singers who are gearing up for the most awaited Wilfy Rebimbus Memorial Inter-Parish Contest are all set to rock on stage.

The enthusiasm among the participants can be witnessed during the last three days of rehearsals. The organizing committee members are trying to put their best efforts for an entertaining show on Sunday evening.

The grand finale of the Inter parish singing competition in memory of  Wilfy Rebimbus will be held at 5.30 pm on Sunday  November 17 at Jeppu Church  grounds.

All the 34 contestants will perform different songs from the compositions of legend Wilfy Rebimbus. There will be a wide range of entertainment from the parishioners and Wilfy’s troupe members.

The qualifying round was held earlier this month and the parishes qualified for the grand finale are Angelore, Bendur, Bondel, Cordel, Derebail, Bajpe, Milagres, Vamanjoor and Valencia. The contest promises to be a tough battle between 9 parishes of the diocese with rendition of most of Wilfy’s best songs.

The compere for the evening will be Cyril Gregory Sequeira, popularly known as CGS Taccode. A well-known writer in Konkani who has written several stories, poems and humorous works for the past forty years. His column “Fugetyo” in Raknno weekly is well known among the Konkani people. He has published more than 25 books. He is a close associate of the Rebimbus family.

The eminent judges for the finals are:

Fr Denis D’Sa

Fr  Denis D’Sa, is currently the public relations officer, Udupi diocese and the Parish Priest of St Antony’s Church, Kuntal Nagar,Udupi.

He was the administrator of Father Muller Medical College, College of Nursing, College of Allied Health Sciences and School of Nursing).

He is a well known talented priest in the city.  He has a vast experience in the field of music. Being a singer and a composer himself, Fr Denis has composed many hymns and brought out many devotional albums.

He has talents for singing, oratory and directing music. He has produced and directed many Religious CDs. He has conducted more than 300 Seminars on Media Education, Communication, Value education, Art and Culture, Inter-religious dialogue for High school & College students, Youth & Adults. Recently he had been as one of the juries for the Gulf Voice of Mangalore finals.  He was the Director / Secretary Sandesha Foundation for Culture & Education. Fr Denis was a nominated member by The Government Of Karnataka to The Karnataka Konkanni Sahithya Academy. During his tenure as director, Sandesha Foundation was honoured with Rajyothsava Award both by The State Government and The D.K. District Administration for Sandesha’s contribution to the promotion of art and culture and education (fine arts )

Joel Pereira

“Sangeeth Guru” Joel Pereira is a well-known name in the field of Konkani music and is proficient in playing diverse instruments like the keyboard, violin, guitar, sitar, mandolin, accordion, and other brass instruments.

It seems that music runs in his veins and Joel has manifested it in ample measure with his dedication and musical inclination. Joel is a multi-talented personality and has been a music composer and arranger who has written and directed religious plays. He has traveled widely and has conducted music for more than 500 stage shows both in India and abroad. He has arranged music for more than 300 audio albums in Konkani, Tulu, Kannada, English, and Malayalam languages. 

He has rendered valuable service as a choir master and has presided as judge for various singing competitions. Joel was one among the jury for three editions of ‘Gulf Voice of Mangalore’.

Ivan Sequeira

A permanent and popular member of Wilfy Music Nites, Ivan Sequeira, a lover of Konkani Music, never misses a chance to sing a Konkani song, whether he is in Mangalore, Bombay, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia or Kuwait!

He makes himself always available and is overjoyed to sing on stage and the audience too is very happy to hear his voice. Melodious, expressive and vivacious, Ivan exudes a certain charm while singing and keeps his audience mesmerized by his voice. At Don Bosco Hall competitions, Ivan started winning 1st place golden awards in the Solo, Duet and Group category competitions. The keen observer Wilfy Rebimbus, “the Konkan Kogull” took a great liking for Ivan’s singing talents and incorporated him in his Wilfy Nite singing troupe! Ivan’s every performance had an electrifying effect on the audience together with a thundering applause.

He has completed a satisfying 39 years of his life singing with Wilfy Rebimbus troupe! Ivan was honored by United Youngster & Wilfy and Meena with a Gold Medal and Trophy for his long dedication towards Wilfy and his group.

Speaking to daijiworld, Fr Nelson D’Almedia, parish priest of Jeppu said “The judgment will be based on the day’s performance of the singer and purely on their singing and performance.

“We have selected the best Judges who have been associated with Konkani Music and Wilfy Rebimbus. Their experience in the music field is tremendous and surely the best singer and performer of the day will grab the title. We wish all the finalists every best in the Grand Finale,” he said.

This event will raise funds for the medical and educational needs of the less fortunate parishioners; hence there is an entrance fee for the event.
