Mangalore, Nov 16: "To undertake temporary road repair work at Shiradi Ghat, the central government has sanctioned Rs 4 crore and the National Highway authority will begin the work in a week," said district in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai.

Addressing the reporters in his new office on Saturday November 16, minister Rai said the local MP could also initiate or take steps against the bad roads but he did not do so and adding to that he is playing a political gimmick.

After Congress government came to power in state, it has launched various pro-people works especially giving importance to poor section of the society. Even then opposition leaders point out on our mistakes, which is not proper, he said.

When Chattisgarh chief minister gave 1 kg rice at Re 2 to poor people, he was praised by the citizens and they called him as ‘Chaval Wala Babu’. But our chief minister Siddaramaih did not get appreciation even after giving rice at Re 1, said minister.

He added "The Congress government in state and center has conducted various developments for the interest of people. Till now, the amount sanctioned by the center to state under central road fund did not exceed Rs 125 crores but this time our transport minister Oscar Fernandes has allotted Rs 1,000 crore for road development in the state."

"When it comes to compensation to farmers who suffered loss due to rots in arecanut, earlier leaders only responded to their problems but no compensation was given to them. But this time, Siddaramaih has allotted a compensation of Rs 20 crores and Rs 6 crores to the district and in Udupi respectively," he added.

The government has also asked to speed up the road construction work in various other places, added Rai.

In a reply to a reporters question about the Yettinahole project, Rai said 'scientific research has to be conducted in the area’.

Speaking about Kasturi Ranganna’s report on Western Ghats where no development works should be undertaken in the eco sense zones, Rai said that since the central government has accepted this stance, even the state government will stand by the decision.

Former Mayors Shashidar Heggde, Ashraf among others were present.

It would be interesting to know how many crores have been spent so far on this stretch. We have been hearing about patchworks from ministers over the past several years .Each time they seem to be spending 'crores '.Wonder where this money is all going. Bangalore is the Capital and Mangalore is now the second largest and most important city of Karnataka . They should build a super highway using tunnels just like the Mumbai -Pune highway which is at present one of the best highways in India.

Rs 4 crore is a peanut for repair of Shiradi ghat roads. Its in a pathetic condition. The road is full of potholes like Moon's surface. Many contractors who took the work earlier have built mansions of their own not the road.

Dear Jacob Mendonca, Very well said. Our politicians saction crores of money collected from the taxpayers to development work, but no one cares if the work and money has been spent on the right purpose. Politicians do not care if the said project has been properly implemented or not. The majority of this sanctioned money is eaten by the Contractors and middlemen. The whole system is corrupt and this will continue if someone is not held accountable and we the people should fight together and ask the minister if he knows where the monies have been spent.

    Dear DW readers,

Out of sanctioned 4 crores of rupees,I doubt even a sum of RS.4 will be spent to repair the Shiradi Ghat. Probably this amount has been sanctioned in order to enable our politicians to spend for the next year Lok Sabha elections.Mr. Rai says RS.1000 crores have been sanctioned by MR.Oscar Fernandes. Rai should also explain to us which roads in Karnaka he has allocated this large sum of funds. Why the ex Road transport minister Mr.Kamalnath did not sanction this much amount for our road development? Ever since I met Mr.Oscar on 27th October, I have been sending mails after mails urging him to repair the Shiradi Ghat on priority basis.

I have just finished my 4 day trip to Pondicheri & Velankani travelling on National Highways no.44,45 & 79.I did not find a single pothole on these high ways.Even on Pondicheri City roads I did not notice any potholes. But when I crossed our Check post I faced with plenty of potholes & patch up work on the Bangalore City roads. It clearly shows that our Karnataka politicians r least bothered for our road development work.Mr.Oscar & Mr. Rai r not doing a favour for us.It is their utmost duty to provide us smooth motorable pothole rather manhole free roads for the tax they r collecting on our Vehicle purchases. We must unitedly fight for our right to get a permanent solution for our Shiradi Ghat road.

Thanks for sanctioning some funds to repair our Shiradi Ghat road which is really in a hopeless condition. My sincere request with the Minister is to ensure quality work without any compromise on work standard and also sanction additional funds if required. Let us have the best road in Shiradi Ghat without any compromise. Thanq.

Four crores are just a pittance for such heavy work. Has this Ramanath Rai has ever seen the size of the potholes. (Better call them "Man holes" because one man can stand upright in such potholes, they are so deep).

Bangalore city recently got an imported mechanized pot-hole-filler mounted on a truck which can fill one pot hole within five minutes with good quality. Why cant govt allot a similar machine permanently for Shiradi Ghat which can fill potholes in 35 KM of Shiradi ghat road within one day (if at all Road existed). Pothole filling work has to be done round the year and permanent staff and similar machine has to be maintained there round the year. Potholes should be filled on day-to-day basis in Ghat section.

Good news! I am afraid of charmadi ghat, shiradi ghat, etc. since my childhood. So many accidents happen many die, still the politicians open their eyes very very slowly. May be they are afraid to go for elections by next year. Any way I too want to go chickmangalore, so the road must be repaired now itself. All the best.
