Another 'innovation': Rs 28 lac worth gold seized at Mangalore airport

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Nov 20: The job of customs and DRI officials at Mangalore International Airport seems to be growing more challenging every day, with some of the notorious passengers trying innovative ways to smuggle in yellow metal through the airport.

In another such case, once again two Kasargod-bound passengers who arrived at Mangalore airport at 7.30 am on Tuesday via Air India Express were caught for smuggling 920 grams of gold, worth around Rs 28 lac, in a suitcase. The gold was shaped into a wire and hidden in the beedings of the suitcase. When customs officials passed the suitcase through the screen, they grew suspicious and found the gold hidden in the suitcase in the form of wires coated with silver paint.

The passengers have been identified as Abdul Nazeer Bannur and Abdul Jaleel Talangara Ismail. Both of them have been arrested and the gold has been seized.

In the past passengers from Bhatkal and Kasargod had been arrested for smuggling gold through footwear, baby food products, quilt covers and several other 'innovative' ways.

This case is a clear signal to notorious passengers not to smuggle goods in any such ways as both customs and DRI are alert all the time.

I have personally encountered. Its ALL of them who just wait. Plus if its a single girl they try to act smart all the more.

They troubled me and give looks when I was in the security queue. Customs has become horrible in Mlore.

I can see the difference between doing one's job or being selfish to make money.

The rest of them see this happening and enjoy it.

Please look into the facts before you accuse officials . first of all everyone are not same and take bribe there are good officials also . people who come from abroad should know the rules and regulation before coming down. lots of people come with the amount of gold in form of bangles and chains which exceeds the prescribed norms . they come and argue with officials saying they did not know rules and they do not agree to pay the duty . if rules are explained at spot they argue shout at officials . now whose duty is it to know the rules and regulation before entering to the country. Disclose the amount of gold carried before leaving India follow the rules then if anyone harasses complained to higher officials no one will stop. but if people do not follow rule and get more gold do not want to pay duty and try to bribe officials and get away . again this is not done by all but this is the fact which is happening . if at all officials are demanding money who is responsible for it think think think ....
Please dont generalize coz there are good and honest officials out there still .

Hats off to the custom officers at Mangalore Airport. At the same time some lady officers demanding bribe from female passengers. Last week,my relative arrived from Dubai and she was wearing two gold bangles. The officer demanded Rs. 2000.00 and took the same from the passenger and allowed her to go. The daring officer forced the passenger to open her purse in front of her and took the money. Can someone give the address of higher officers to report such behavior.

Slash the custom duty to 0% so that the gold price in India is at par with International price, there won't be any smuggling.

In my opinion, imposing controls, Govt is creating opportunities to smugglers.

Smuggling profession cannot be eradicated even by educating or by providing seminars on the evils of smuggling.

Smugglers are smart (no doubt) but they forget to realize that sleuths are smarter than them.

Some people from Kasaragod & Bhatkal still do not understand the seriousness. again and again they are carrying the gold in different shapes and caught by customs authorities. may be they are not reading the Mangalore region Kannada newspapers as they don't know to read Kannada. so they don't know every day people are caught by customs authorities in the Mangalore airport for gold smuggling. Any govt or non govt organizations have to conduct the seminars to make them understand the custom rules and not to carry the gold while travelling to India.

In my opinion, all the confiscated/seized (smuggled items) will become government property and the passenger may not be allowed to take the goods home even if he/she is prepared to pay import tax/duty (once caught).
Let the Customs officials be vigilant, use more professionalism and catch more & more such culprits. Customs departments (Government’s) revenue will see some positive growth. Why not?

One cannot be called an honest man when that person is encouraging smuggling i.e. breaking the Indian Government's law.
It is utterly shameful that you are ashamed to call yourself an Indian, being an Indian.
Try to adopt another country and you will be no more an "INDIAN" and no need to feel ashamed.

It is better if we do not have persons who are ashamed of being Indians amidst us.

Its ridiculous that all the readers are generalizing people from KASARAGOD and BHATKAL for smuggling gold. There are at least 50-75 people on each aircraft landing in Mangalore who are from Kasaragod and Bhatkal only a few are smuggling gold.
If u all are adamant on generalizing, there is another striking similarity amongst all those are caught smuggling gold in Mangalore airport be they are from kasaragod, bhatkal or mangalore. Comment on that please.

Wonder the amt. of gold which was being brought in before the duties were less...is it only because duties have increased all this is now coming to the attention of the Customs officials...or was there a black sheep in customs who has been tsfrd or dismissed who connived with the smugglers...one thing for sure, the Mangalore airport seems to be a very soft spot for smugglers bringing in gold till date...

Yes where is the confiscated gold going can the Indian citizen know, what did they think about the NRI's? Proudly I am saying "I am a shame to be an Indian" Why the Indians are forced to migrate to Overseas? This is mainly because of our rubbish Government policies. If NRI is working outside the country and earning good money they will purchase kilos of gold they have not stolen the gold. Why do the customs official interfere every time don’t fear to this rules. Carry as much as you can politicians are bigger thief. They have a good amount in foreign banks. Can any officials have an answer?

My friend brain! if its not stolen why they need to hide and take it home. If you are proud to be a NRI and if you are rich, nobody is stopping you from buying anything but at the same time show discipline and be ready to pay the tax or any formalities that Indian government put in place and there shouldn't be any problem. U feel shame to be an Indian because you don't have the self respect at first!

Relax...The gold being smuggled in some kilo's is not hard earned money at all but they are just acting as messengers for some commission from the smuggling racket for the gold show rooms in & around Kasargod.

In Dubai / middle east gold not being sold in footpath to buy in kilo's.
