Daijiworld Media Network – Mangalore (EP)

Mangalore, Nov 20: Mangalore International Airport which is currently open 20 hours a day will be operational round the clock on all seven days of the week starting December 1.

Catering service will also be available thereby enabling all passengers to have fresh food. A five-star hotel in the city has been entrusted with the service and the hotel will also be serving food in the aircraft, said a source from Air India.

Jet Airways will be provided catering service by a hotel in Kerala. The food will be prepared in Malavoor.  As catering service is available 24 hours a day, it will be convenient for the passengers, said J T Radhakrishnan, airport director.

Down from 9th to 27th position

Meanwhile, in a news that would sadden the hearts of Mangaloreans, the airport has slipped from 9th to 27th position in a matter of just six months, according to the bi-annual Customer Satisfaction Survey Airports Authority of India (AAI).

The survey is conducted among 52 small airports with less than 15 lac passengers a year. Hubli airport has maintained its previous ranking and even improved its score, while Mangalore airport, which scored an impressive 4.68 last time to finish 9th, could manage a score of only 4.12 out of 5 this time.

As per the survey, Jodhpur airport tops the list with a score of 4.69.

The survey was based on 33 parameters, including availability of baggage trolleys, parking facility, waiting time in check-in queue, waiting time for security clearance, cleanliness, and speed of baggage service. Among these, Mangalore airport scored the highest in cleanliness of washrooms and airport terminal.

Durga Facility Management Services Pvt Ltd, an ISO awarded company is managing the cleanliness of the entire Mangalore airport.

Please introduce direct flights to popular destinations like Dubai, Abu Dhabhi, Doha from where direct flights are available to other middle east destinations, US and Europe. This was we could avoid going to Mumbai, Bangalore or Chennai. Allow Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ethihad Airlines to come to Mangalore. Slipping to 9th to 27th position is to bad, it is the airlines staff who is responsible and the miserable staff who disappoints even the passengers travelling abroad with the 15 kg luggage allowance in spite of knowing that they have connecting flights.

Airports are gateways to cities and regions hence they need to get upgraded repeatedly.
They must have a decent ion of commercial flights, internal and international.
They should have easy access in one way or another, like bus and train facilities of good standard.
They should a comfortable multi-cuisine restaurant in the terminal
They should have well organized traveler amenities, such as a car rental counter.
    Whereas in Mangalore Airport:
The car-parking lots and the parking operators are unorganized and unscientific.
The passengers picked up and ped off area looks like a war zone. Passengers can be picked up and ped off along the curbside or sidewalk however, vehicles cannot be left unattended. Curbside parking is not allowed and unattended vehicles may be towed.
Avoid looping around the Airport’s curbside until family or friends arrive, instead create a new free “Cell Phone Lots” where the vehicle can wait till the family/friends arrive.
    For Picking up:
Visitors picking up family or friends are encouraged to utilize the free ‘Cell Phone Lots’. Just wait in your vehicle and ask your passenger to contact you when they claim their luggage, then drive to the terminal's walkway or curbside to pick up your passenger after they have claimed their luggage.
The airport needs constant upgrading of the equipment and the passenger seats to the latest in the market.
Our airport is not bad. Good luck Mangalore Airport!

First of all airport staff should have proper training, they are pathetic. The Even Immigration clerk doesn’t know what is his job….just two days ago it happened when I was flying from Mangalore airport. The immigration clerk who, I think, supposed to check the passport and stamp was asking unnecessary questions to a lady passenger in front of me, i.e. why she is going on a visit, how many times she visited previously..etc etc. The daring lady also gave him a fitting reply that it is none of his business and If he find any problem with her passport he may question on that . Next he asked me what job I’m doing in Gulf ! I said “do we need to reveal what we are doing in gulf….if you still insist..ivl say that I’m washing vessels…. R u interested to join me ? he was stunned and yelled at me. I said bye..bye.. have a nice day !

    My dear Ivan Udupi,
For your info..this was my 26th trip to India and 7th through the Mangalore airport…
Even Pandu Hawaldaars at the Mangalore ask ‘kya leke aya, sona hai kya…’ while we are passing through ..
But I find Customs officials nowadays are brilliant, very obliging, if we speak with them in Tulu or Kannada……….They are aware 'we are' 100% gold !

We Appreciate for the upcoming new ideas and developments of Mangalore International Airport. In the meantime it should always rise n its position tht should be the motto. Five star hotels may not feed the middle class, we will not encourage the catrers in flight rather appreciate if the proper meals provided on the highly paid Air tickets.

It is very much essential for Mangalore airport to get the required 1 km additional runway so that other international airlines can take interest in operating to Mangalore. Present state government should take heed of this and do the needful. This will eventually uplift the status of our twin districts.

Good news but if Government not giving to landing rights to other gulf career to land Mangalore then no point of opening 24 Hours. DGCA should give landing rights to other airline also like OMAN AIR, GULF AIR.QATAR, SAUDI AIRLINE,FLY DUBAI and other airline tooo then only our mangalore airport will get no1 rank and its useful to 24hours service.

It is good to know that Managalore Airport will be open 24 hours of the day. It is sad to note that Airpot has been downgraded from 9th to 27th. It is correctly done. There are no facility hot food at the airport restaurant. Entry to the Air is on the Hill, which is very difficult to reach either by foot or rickshaw. One has hired a vehicle only to reach the airport with luggage or otherwise. The arrow bridge is in dilapidated condition. The vehicle cannot cross the entrance flyover. Private vehicles cannot pick up the passengers at the arrival gate. They have to compulsorily carry the luggage to parking area. The less said is better. Who cares for the passenger amenities.

the way mangalore airport constructed look like school ... The same concept could have been well planed state of the art airport and brought good image to our 2 twin cities , first change the way inside officers working, make more professionalism ! Directors or whoever runs the airport should go abroad and see how the function/ officers/ operation takes place

When compared to Mumbai International airport, I must say the services at Mangalore airport are far better. No long queue for immigration, no waiting for customs clearance, after the flight is landed you can come out within half an hour whereas in Bombay airport it takes almost two hours. The landing scene at Mangalore airport with hills and green green fields is a beauty to watch and considered one of the best landing sites in the world. If more private airlines operate to Mangalore from Gulf, I can see lot of passengers flying directly. At least we have a airport in our city and we should not care about its ratings as long as the current level of service is maintained.

Round the clock operation from 1-Dec-2013, is a good development!
All those worked for the development must be thanked!
But, slipping from 9th to 27th position in Customer Satisfaction is so sad!
Service industry should always strive to meet and exceed customer's satisfaction!
Reason for privatization is customer satisfaction!
