Bangalore: Minister Santosh Lad quits over illegal mining charges

Bangalore, Nov 22 (IANS): The multi-crore mining scam in Karnataka Friday cost Congress minister Santosh Lad his job amid mounting pressure for his resignation ahead of the state legislature's session from Nov 25 at Belgaum.

Ending the day-long suspense and political drama, the 34-year-old mining baron, who was minister of state for infrastructure development, information and Kannada and culture departments finally submitted his resignation letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

"I have tendered my resignation to the chief minister in view of the allegations of illegal mining against me and my company and to avoid any embarrassment to our government," Lad told reporters later.

Lad's mining firm V.S. Lad & Sons was indicted by then Karnataka ombudsman (Lokayukta) Justice N. Santosh Hegde for illegally extracting and supplying about 10,000 tonnes of iron ore during 2008-10 from Sandur mines in Bellary district, about 330km from here.

Lad's firm is also being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on a Supreme Court directive after its appointed central empowered committee (CEC) classified it under 'C' category mining lessee and directed the state government to cancel its license for allegedly committing large scale illegal mining.

"Though there was no pressure from the CM or the party's high command, I have resigned because I don't want my party to be embarrassed further. I am open to investigations and am sure I will be proved innocent," Lad asserted.

Lad is the first minister to quit the six-month-old Congress government after the party returned to power following its victory in the state legislative assembly elections in May.

The resignation came after whistle-blower S.R. Hiremath of Samaja Parivartanan Samudayaa, an NGO, on whose petition the apex court ordered the CBI probe, recently met Governor H.R. Bhardwaj with documentary evidence to seek Lad's removal from the cabinet.

After the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmakers petitioned the governor with the same demand, Bhardwaj advised the chief minister to look into the matter.

The BJP and two other opposition parties -- Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) and Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) threatened to disrupt the state legislature session at Belguam, about 500 km from here in northern Karnataka, if Lad was not removed from the ministry.

The Lad family has been in mining business for decades and the controversy over Santosh Lad's alleged involvement in illegal mining has pitted him against his cousin Anil Lad, a Congress lawmaker from Bellary district.

Laad brothers are the pioneers of mining mafia in Karnataka. They indulged in mining mafia before the entry of Reddy brothers. If you want to know more about these Laad brothers read Ravi Belegere's book "ಅನಿಲ್ ಲಾಡ್ ಮತ್ತು ನಲವತ್ತು ಕಳ್ಳರು".

This is another misconception by Sangh supporters. Even many of the Sangh supporters had commented mine as a fake identity. They think all Hindus support Jana Sangh ideology. The reality is a majority of Hindus do not support the divisive politics of the Sangh. They know Sangh is only using Hindus as vote bank politics.

Luckily for India, the majority of Hindus still believe in secularism and hence they have kept the communal forces away from governance for most of the year.

It is simple maths, even if 50% of Hindus take one side that a party can win the election. But the beauty is the voting doesn’t take place that way. They consider themselves as Indian first and religion next. They vote for the party which can take all the people together.

That is the reason we still have united India.

Sathish sir, Your calculation is totally wrong. As per the election statistics, % of Hindus supported BJP is greater than INC. INC is winning because of minority vote banks and not because of Hindu votes. Also, note that around 40% of registered voters are NOT voting and most of them are Hindus. Please note these statistics.

    Dear Mr. Ramesh Poojary,

While I agree with you that the turnout for voting is around 60%, there is no statistics to show which community voted for whom. In 2009 General Elections BJP (not NDA) got around 22% of the votes polled and this does not support your statement. As far as the nonvoters are considered we do not know which side they will vote. If you take simple mathematics, in the event majority of Hindu voters voted for BJP then BJP should get more than 35% of the votes.

Even Hindu dominated areas in Karnataka BJP lost badly in the last assembly elections and in some places lost deposit. So my statement that a majority of Hindus does not approve communalism still stands.

Why this lungi-dance CM has forced LAD to quit suddenly, though he kept on denying any allegations against Lad from last 6 months? Do you think is this his crusade against corruption? No, not at all. Here are the reasons.

    1. His chair started shaking : SR Hiremath has been showing the proofs to Rajyapala from last 6 months. Plus freedom fighter Doreswamy, BJPians and other social activists have also been requesting him. This Rajyapala was not as much active as he used to be during BJP's Govt. For the name sake he used to say he has given proofs to CM and awaiting his response on this, from last 3-4 months. But this rajyapala has never taken any concrete steps to give an exit to Lad because it is not BJP Govt. He used to talk about Lad when media prompted him to talk about Lad during his public functions. But during BJP's rule he was very proactive and volunteerly speaking. Don't think he is SAMVIDHANA RAKSHAKA, but he is SAMVIDHANA BHAKSHAKA! He is 200 percent congi. But suddenly what made him to take U turn? Here is the climax.. Just a last week social activist TJ Abraham has met Rajyapala and sought permission to prosecute CM Siddu for not ping Lad. This time Rajyapala was completely nervous. Yes, he was not answerable this time. He realized that he can afford to lose one minister than a chief minister. Just 2-3 days back, he conveyed this to Siddu and requested him to lad.

    2. To avoid more tainted ministers : Congress High-Command has given its nod to induct DKS into cabinet. Along with him tainted MLAs Anil Lad, Roshan Biag, Ramesh Kumar are knocking the door. If Siddu keeps Santhosh lad in the cabinet, he will have to face more embarrassment in future. Lad's exit can become reason for avoiding other tainted ministers.

    3. Pressure from inside : There are many leaders in congress who are against Santhosh Lad. Anil Lad has openly said this. The number of voice against Lad has increased recently.

It was very unfortunate that double standard person like Siddu took out huge Rally to Bellary dancing on the road along with others but made Santosh Lad as Minister in his newly formed Government. Fearing BJP’s statewide Morcha against tainted Congress Ministers in present Government, CONGiss had no chance but to side line Lad Brothers to normalize BJP Leaders in Assembly Hall. OK, first work is done but when CBI will arrest Santosh Lad to put him behind bar like they did for Reddy Brothers? Can anyone guess how much Lad Brothers financed CONGiss so far?

Santosh Lad is protégé of political guru Siddaramaiah and he will return to power after the parliament elections next year. After all BJP also is aware this ‘illegal mining’ allegations on Santosh Lad is only a storm in the teacup prior to the winter session of the assembly in Belgaum. BJP couldn’t file a charge sheet or FIR against Santosh Lad while its Chief Minister Yeddy and his ‘Reddy cabinet’ was being hauled into criminal investigations and jails.

Bhandarkar Sir, don’t bother about “Disagree” marks. Here we can see more people like to press Disagree button than Agree button just because we talk against CONGiss malpractice. One thing you might have noticed from our friend Jossey that though he writes always against the natural law and justice but never bothered about his critics nor he reply to them too. This is the true spirit of any blogger. Though we can’t compare Shri Satya Sai Baba with any normal human beings but once he too said that “Giving reply or comments on my criticizers is not my job and not my nature too, I do my job and let them criticize the way they want”

The difference between Congress and BJP is that whenever there is an accusation Congress minister resign at their own will and BJP ministers need to be sacked!

its the difference between B.J.P and congress, corruption is there in every party but Congress take action even if is Maharashtra chief minister ( Ashok chauvan) or party alliance k.r Balu, CONGRESS have grip over its party, which B.J.P doesn't
