Kundapur, Nov 23: The residents of Shiroor rose in protest against the poor condition and delay in repair works of the national highway.

From the past several months, commuters have been finding it difficult to travel due to the poor condition of the road from Byndoor to Shiroor. The elected representatives and officials had assured that the repair work would start from November 15.

But as the work got delayed, people came forward to stage a protest on Friday November 22.

The repair work on the highway from Shiroor Sunkadagundi was worse. In addition, only gravel stones and mud were scattered on the highway making commuting even more difficult. As the repair work which started after several months of delay was not done properly, people joined hands and protested.

Condemning the poor quality of repair work, a rally was taken from Kelapete to the town.

Shops closed

Shopkeepers, who were tired of the dust rising from the roads, closed their shops and joined the protest. All the shops in Shiroor and market road area were closed. The protestors demanded the officials to re-tar the road, and warned of keeping up the protest until they received clear justification on the matter.

'Appropriate work from Sunday'

Responding to people’s problems, NH Kundapur zone engineer Y Krishna Rao said the tender process for Kundapur-Goa four lane work has been completed. "For complete re-tarring of road, the department is short of funds. The tender process of repair work is in the final stage. Hence only patch work is possible," he said.

To this, the protestors took the department officials to task and said that they would stop protesting only if the officials repaired the road properly. Later, the engineer contacted the contractor and other officials over the phone and assured people to start re-tarring of the road in some of the highly damaged places from Sunday.

The Surface Transport Minister Oscar Fernandes is from Udupi District, but in his home district itself the Roads are so pathetic. Why the people of Udupi gave him a grand welcome when he came to his Home dist after becoming the Central Minister in last June.

Surface transport Minister never Travels by road at any time. He travels only by Air. So, he does not have the horrible experience of travelling by Kundapur-Goa Highway. Oscar is still dreaming about non-feasible Shiradi Ghat Tunnel is costing Rs.4,000 crore Rupees. People should protest in front of his local office in Udupi and bring him out of that dream.

    Dear Protestors,
Please go on protesting. This is the only way we can get our roads properly repaired by our corrupt officials.Mr. Oscar is busy attending inaugural functions, the foundation stone laying ceremony of Congress Bhavan in Kaup for which he has sanctioned Rs.30 crores. But the Engineer says they have no funds to repair the national highway 66.What a pity,What a shame? They have ample money to waste & to get kick backs.Ever since Britishers built these roads, our corrupt politicians failed miserably even to do minor repairs. These politicians ruined our Country.Look at the road in Mundkoor, near my friend Sachidanand's house where I drive daily when I am in Mangalore. This road is almost washed away.Look at the Chiradi Ghat. For the last 66 years these corrupt politicians, cheated us & plundered the wealth to fill their pockets.Friends time has come that we voters should never elect these ministers & politicians again during 2014 Lok Sabha election. The amount they r drawing for their Constituency development has been pocked by these corrupt MP/MLS.So what U can expect from them.NOTHING

Well said Dinesh. The minister only goes on dias along with his wife and inaugurates the already completed work. Talks about better roads in Shiradi ghat and other national highways, still the National highway from Mangalore to BC Road is not completed and the completed road is already torn in many places and worse near BA collage, thumbe. If all MP and MLA's take their wife to the stage then we need to create bigger stages!! very bad. Shioor is nearby to his native and the road is in bad condition from the past several months and still its not repaired then what is the use of being a union minister for Highways??

If we reduce the fuel consumption, the saved huge funds can be invested in roads and infrastructure. It will solve the severe problems of the entire surface transport sector.
If we need, we can do it.

Surface transport sector is ripe for a rapid revolution.
If 25% of the bull part (engine) made to control and manage the vehicle, the 75% of cart part (the commuters and goods) can be completely free of fuel, pollution, costs and that too with the generation of a certain volume of energy, as an additional bonus.

There are so many examples of developing at least their own constituency by our various Leaders like Late Rajiv Gandhi in Amethi, Sharad Pawar in Baramati, Late Madhav Rao Scinidia in Gwalior, Navjoth Singh Siddu in Chandigarh, etc always bothered about the development of their own Constituency first. But whereas in Karnataka almost all Leaders failed to do any developmental works in their area and a classic example is Moily in Karkala region and Oscar Fernandes in Udupi region. And our beloved Oscar Mamu is the current Transport Minister at Central but he has never seen the condition our NH66 so far.
