Belgaum: Yeddy takes dharna to Assembly; Marathi speech causes commotion

Belgaum, Nov 26 (DHNS): KJP leader B S Yeddyurappa on Monday launched an indefinite dharna in the well of the Legislative Assembly, demanding that the government extend ‘Shaadi Bhagya’ scheme to BPL families of all the communities and restore the supply of food grain to APL card holders under the public distribution system.

He refused to budge despite Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and several senior members trying to convince him to withdraw the dharna. “The scheme has been announced in the revised budget 2013-14. The government will seriously consider extending the scheme to all communities in the next budget. I urge Yeddyurappa to call off the dharna. He should not make it a prestige issue,” the chief minister stated.

Earlier, soon after the House made obituary references to some noted personalities, Yeddyurappa along with five KJP MLAs trooped into the well.  “I am a former chief minister. Though I staged dharna for 24 days in Bangalore, the government did not bother to even meet me. This is the most unbecoming of the government,” he stated.

The Speaker chose to ignore the KJP protest and asked the leader of the Opposition H D Kumaraswamy to make a preliminary submission on an adjournment motion that was sought to be moved on farmers’ issues. Then the BJP and the JD(S) members, including Jagadish Shettar, R Ashoka, Y S V Datta and Sa Ra Mahesh, urged the Speaker to look into the issue raised by Yeddyurappa.

Under  ‘Shaadi Bhagya’, a one-time financial assistance of Rs 50,000 will be given to each of the newly married couple belonging to the minority communities.

Heated exchanges

Then the Speaker agreed to allow Yeddyurappa to make a preliminary submission on an adjournment motion he sought to move on Shaadi Bhagya, provided all the members of his party withdraw their dharna. The KJP leader suddenly turned furious.

He flung a bunch of papers he was holding and rushed towards the Speaker’s chair. “I am a former chief minister. The government does not even care to meet me though I staged dharna for 24 days in Bangalore. I have my own responsibilities,” he shouted at the top of his voice addressing the Speaker.

Thimmappa too lost his cool, resulting in a heated exchange between them. “I also have my own responsibility. I know how to run the House. This is too much. I will be forced to name you,” the Speaker warned.

Yeddyurappa then announced that he will launch an indefinite dharna in the well of the House. Two of his party legislators Guru Patil and Vishwanath Patil joined him in his dharna in the well of the House.

Marathi speech raises din

Saffron turbans were seen and Marathi words were heard in the Legislative Assembly for the first time after a gap of five years, at the session on Monday.

Sambaji Lakshman Patil (Belgaum South) and Aravind Patil (Khanapur), Independent MLAs backed by the Maharashtra Ekikarana Samiti (MES), entered the House wearing the saffron headgear. The MES had no presence in the last Assembly.

The two MLAs walked out of the House on Day One itself, with members cutting across party affiliations taking exception to their attempt to speak in Marathi. Sambaji tried to speak in Marathi on an obituary reference in the House. Other members raised objection to it and insisted that he must speak in Kannada. He got support from Aravind, who argued in Hindi that Marathi is one of the 22 scheduled languages under the Constitution of India and that they have every right to speak in Marathi.

Speaker Kagodu Thimmappa said one is allowed to speak in the scheduled languages, including Kannada, in the Lok Sabha. Though the rule book says that a member should submit a copy of such a speech well in advance, these members have not done so. Still, it is not proper to stop them from speaking. “We should all live like brothers. Hence, they should be allowed to speak,” he stated.

But the members opposing the MLAs refused to relent. BJP leader Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri alleged that the MLAs are trying to provoke the Kannada-speaking members in the House. With most of the members opposing their move, the two MLAs chose to walk out, raising slogans.

Yeddy is obviously unhappy with his situation. Regardless, he should consider the following points:
    1. He used to be flanked by many MLAs when in power. He got used to it and it only contributed to the growth of his ego.
    2. He along with his party was elected by electorate. However, the very people are & were capable of dethroning him. There was no need to associate the CM chair with the ego.
    3. He is former CM as he rightly said. In today's world that means nothing unless you are known for your work and having right people around you. Your ego did not allow that too.
    4. Rather than stage Dharna in the house, he better forget visiting Bangalore unless something pressing needs to be brought up in the house. Instead should spend more time in his constituency and other parts of state trying to find out what went wrong and take corrective measures.
The only difference between you and Siddu is, Siddu leaves every part decision to high command, while you heeded high command advice if it suited you. How else would you explain the birth of KJP?
For all the time you spent in the opposition benches you got one chance. I doubt after having seen you in the limelight on how you conducted yourself and how you continue to conduct yourself, you will ever get a chance to lead. You badly need a character makeover.

It is highly unfair to provide the “shaadi bhagya” benefit to a particular community. It should be provided on the basis of the family’s economic status, irrespective of caste or creed.

The MLAs need to understand that unlike other states, Karnataka is a multilingual state. If Belgaum is a part of Karnataka, according the status of the state’s second capital, then why is the major language spoken in the same region is unacceptable? By creating an unnecessary commotion on such silly issues, these politicians are instigating the common man to come on the streets and fight in the name of a language and caste.

Are you reading the news properly? Or failed to understand the content?

In the second para can you see this : “The scheme has been announced in the revised budget 2013-14. The government will seriously consider extending the scheme to all communities in the next budget. I urge Yeddyurappa to call off the dharna. He should not make it a prestige issue,”

Shobakka cann't be seen here because She is not MLA/MLC. Please read the news carefully, the dharna is inside legislative house in Belgaum, not in street side.

Shaadi Bhagya is being considered to poor of all communities are a welcome development!
    Shobhakka's absence clarified, thanks!
If justice is being given fairly to all communities, Yeddy need not feel being neglected by Govt.

We have elected Congress to treat everybody as equal, but they resort to their old gimmicks of providing benefits to only one Community....
Really it's a shame, educated people should raise their voice for the inequality which the Government is showing towards other communities.

    Vincy, Bangkok,

BJP is created due to congress divide and rule policy. Article 370 in J&K is the classic example.

Once we consider our country is secular, why the government makes division in the names of Hindu, Muslims, ....... ?

As long as Congress continues to do it, BJP also tries to take advantage of the same. Ultimately India does not remain secular.

If you have real secularism, oppose Shaadi Bhagya for muslims & education tour for OBC.
By the way, Yaddyurappa is not BJP MLA?? He is agent of congress to divide BJP votes...:-)

Totally agree with you in this Mr. RSRB. Congress started divide and rule policy and BJP took it into next level. Being muslims we do feel 'shaadi Bhagya' is a cheap scheme by congress. but BJP wasn't better either. I remember BJP donated crores of money to different mutts as donations where Churches and Mosques got literally less. This is a dangerous game played by both congress and BJP which will create further gap between communities in India i feel.

Maadidunno Maharaaya.... You gave power to Congress by splitting BJP votes & now experience. Congress is known for making divisions / hatred among people. Why this scheme is not for all poor girls of the state? Why only for One particular community? Only one community paying Tax? Others not? Where are the so called intellectuals now? Why they are silent?

It is unconstitutional to announce a welfare scheme for a particular community. Congress should extend Shaadi Bhagya for all religions. Because of Yeddy's protest all people of Karnataka have come to know about dual standard of congress. It may affect them badly in the next election. Better to accept the mistake now itself.

Each class of society has its own requirements, We elected these leaders and when the public see how they are behaving in Vidana saudha than you can make out that we made mistake in electing these MLA’s. No respect for speaker or CM. They behave like small school children. Abusing, Showing finger, throwing paper/chairs, walking out during the discussion

Dear BJP voters, see what a cartoon you created in the Karnataka political History. Your representatives have no knowledge on how to behave inside an assembly where legislatures are made. Your former CM is on the floor and other formers CM’s who were with him are now relaxing in the assembly. Your fight and agenda against minorities has brought you this day where your favorite Eddy is sitting on his chaddy.
