Mangalore: Renowned artist Jagadish Ammunje no more

Mangalore, Nov 27: Well-known artist Jagadish Ammunje, popularly known as Jagath passed away at a private hospital in the city on Wednesday November 27 following a brief illness. He was 58.

He was an expert in oil painting, diagrams and terracotta paintings. He introduced attractive Janapada backdrops in Karavali Utsav in Mangalore and brought in a wave of new and unique medium of art in the district.

He had also set up 'Tulu Grama' at Vishwa Tulu Sammelan at Ujire 2009 which portrayed the life and traditions of Tulunadu.

He was well versed in terracotta paintings and had given lively appearance to Kalangann at Shakthinagar here and Mumbai’s Konkani Kala Kendra with his paintings.

He enabled Dakshina Kannada district to win first prizes thrice in Mysore Dasara by displaying tableaus depicting life in the district. He had prepared tableaux for Dakshina Kannada and Chikmagalur for this year’s Dasara as well.

He had acted in several Tulu films too. He prepared cover pages for books and line sketches as well as diagrams for inside pages. He was running his own arts gallery by the name Jagath Arts and was guiding and encouraraging young budding artistes. He was also active in 'Kudla Kalavali', an association of film artistes.

He was an alumni of Mangalore University College and was a member of SFI students' association. He worked as a volunteer in literacy campaign in the district.

He leaves behind his wife, son and daughter. His final rites will be held on Thursday, November 28 in Mangalore.

    yes jagath was a friendly and affable person always willing to help and trouble shoot.My experience during my Rotaract days in many meetings with him was always happy. We Mangaloreans have lost a very good human being in Jagat.

    ಕಲಾ ಜಗತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಜಗತ್ ಎಂದೇ ಪರಿಚಿತರಾಗಿದ್ದ ಜಗದೀಶ್ ಅಮ್ಮುಂಜೆಯವರು ಅವಸರಪಟ್ಟಂತೆ ಇಷ್ಟು ಬೇಗ ಎದ್ದು ನಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಹೊರಟಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅವರ ನಿಧನದಿಂದ ಕಲಾ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ದೊಡ್ಡ vacuum ಉಂಟಾಗಿದೆ.

    ಸರಳ ನಿಗರ್ವಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ, ಮೆಲುಮಾತಿನ ಜಗತ್ ಎಂದೂ ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಬಯಸಿದವರಲ್ಲ. ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟ ಕಲಾವಿದರಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅಹಂಕಾರ ತೋರದೆ ಎಲೆಮರೆಯ ಕಾಯಿಯಂತೆ ಕಲಾಸೇವೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗಿದ್ದರು. ಅವರೊಬ್ಬ genuine artist ಆಗಿದ್ದರು. ಕಲೆಯ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರ ಅವರು ಎಂದೂ ಮಾಡ್ಲಿಕ್ಕೆ ಹೋಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ನಿಜವಾದ ಅರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಅವರು ಕಲಾಸಾಧಕರಾಗಿದ್ದರು. ಇಂಥ ಕಲಾವಿದ ಇಂದು ನಮ್ಮೊಡನೆ ಇಲ್ಲ.

    A soft spoken artist that he was he brought in those initial years for love of art. He struggled to make a point through art. His work was noteworthy. He leaves behind a body of work that will be cherished by the Mangaloreans in the years to come. May His soul Rest in Peace.
