Belgaum: Sugarcane farmer commits suicide outside Assembly

Belgaum, Nov 27 (PTI):
A sugarcane farmer today allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide outside the legislature building here during a protest against the "inadequate" minimum support price fixed by state-run Sugarcane Control Board for the crop.

As the winter legislature session is underway here, the farmer alongwith hundreds of others was taking part in an agitation going on for the last three days demanding higher price for sugarcane.

"The farmer was rushed to the hospital. Yes, he was brought dead to the hospital," officials of KLE Hospital, where he was taken after he took the extreme step, said.

The 60-year-old farmer has been identified as Vittal Arabhavi, hailing from Kankanvadi village in Raibag taluka, police said, adding, he was rushed immediately after he consumed pesticide, but was declared brought dead by doctors.

Sugarcane growers, who have rejected the price of Rs 2,500 a tonne fixed by the government, are continuing their stir demanding that it be raised to Rs 3,500 per tonne.

The government had recently constituted a 15-member sugarcane control board after the Karnataka Sugarcane (purchase and supply control) Act 2013 was amended in the monsoon session of the state legislature.

Besides government officials, representatives of sugarcane farmers and mills are members of the board.

As the third largest producer in the country after Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, Karnataka crushes 33 million tonnes of cane in 58 mills to produce 3.4 million tonnes of sugar annually.

Opposition leaders H D Kumaraswamy (JDS) and former Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda slammed the government over the incident, saying had it responded promptly and swiftly to the farmers' demand, it could have been avoided.

Farmers' leader and MLA Puttannayya said the government was fully responsible for the death of the farmer, as it was "stretching the issue" for no reason.

If Yeddi was der, he would ve solved all these problems..

Even if yeddi had done some illegal activities but then he served the state better. and all were satisfied by his work.

watever siddu has done til nw, people are not happy wit this.

Most of the politicians will do illegal work. but then they were not caught, bad luck for yeddi, he caught

All the Sugar factories in north Karnataka are in the hands of Politicians with Criminal background like in Gokak & Hukkeri of Belgaum dist. So, farmers are fleeced too much, and they have no alternative but to commit suicide since both Cong & BJP governments are in favour of Sugar factory owners.

Commiting suicide by a farmer in Belgaum against the demands of sugarcane prices is baseless. This may be blackmailing the government and best remedy is negotiations with the government to settle the demands. Please don't encourage this to anyone.Thanq.

Congress MP claimed Rs one crore from the government as a medical claim. But here a farmer who is giving bread to the entire nation can not get better price for his crop. Congress always want poor to be poor and they can buy their votes at the time election and rule the country. But the time has changed and people have learned the Congress dirty game. congress always plays vote bank politics. God save the country.

Yeddi should arrest first, because he is the main murderer of the farmer, because he wants to spoil the congress government name, by the way Yeddi is the shameless person because he is the one who killed farmers. When he was the CM, I can't understand why this man so shameless and still living?

Very Very sad incident. What the hell this Govt doing? Why can't the Govt. give the pricing as demanded by the poor Farmers instead of SHAADI BHAGYA scheme? Govt has Rs 50,000 to give free but they don't have Rs 1,000 more for hard working farmers.

Govt has funds for useless issues to create their own vote bank, but they don't have funds for the hard working farmers. It's high time that the farmers should strike each & every Congress MLA as they are sole responsible for this tragedy.

    Rest his soul in peace.
Some people taking very harsh decision for the silly reason also.
If one farmer demanded something, govt cannot take any decision immediately. CM have to discuss with cabinet and concerned person.
Opposition parties cannot blame the govt, as during the BJP rule so many farmers suicided and Yeddi govt killed farmers by using police force.
If govt fixed more price for sugarcane, sugar price will be increased and opposition parties will start blame the govt and protest against price hikes. Actually these opposition parties are good for nothing and no standard policies.

    Read today's Vijaya Karnataka :

Sugarcane growers were protesting outside Suvarna Soudha from last 2 days. BJP ans JDS leaders including Shettar, DVSji and HDK had met the farmers and assured them of raising the issue in session, to their demand of getting better price.

But none from the ruling govt had time to meet the farmers. Look at now, the chief minister went to see the dead body. Had he met the farmers in last 2 days, this could have been avoided.

Taking the moral responsibility both Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister should resign immediately.

The suicide could have been avoided if Govt had responded to the Farmer's demand. But the speaker did not give proper provision to opposition parties to discuss the farmer's issues in the session.

Obviously it is a topic for opposition parties to attack ruling govt. When BJP was in power, Non-Bjp politicians did the same.

Agree...But as you agreed yourself that when BJP was in power non BJPians did the same, means they too didn't worked on farmers right? BJP rules complete 5 years but couldn't do anything except corruption & high dramas.Cong took over a few months back only,so support them to improve farmers/below poverty people.

Cong or BJP or anyone else,we don't care but we need development, that's all...
