Belgaum: BJP stalls proceedings in both Houses over farmer's suicide

Belgaum, Nov 28 (PTI): Staging a dharna, BJP members today created ruckus in the Karnataka Assembly over the suicide of a sugarcane farmer as they demanded Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's resignation blaming him for the tragedy.

Vittal Arabhavi who committed suicide

As the House assembled, BJP members stormed into the well and started shouting slogans against the government and demanded Siddaramaiah's resignation for the suicide of a 60-year old farmer in front of the legislature building here.

BJP Floor Leader Jagadish Shetter blamed Siddaramaiah for the suicide yesterday, saying he could have avoided the tragedy by announcing additional minimum support price for sugarcane on day one of the winter session, on since Monday.

Speaker Kagodu Thimappa adjourned the house for half an hour after his repeated requests to the members asking them to return to their seats went unheeded.

During a protest along with hundreds of others against "inadequate" minimum support price fixed by the state-run Sugarcane Control Board for the crop, the farmer committed suicide by consuming pesticide.

Later speaking to reporters, BJP General Secretary and former Minister C T Ravi said the party would continue its dharna till Siddaramaiah resigns and government announces increase of Minimum Support Price by Rs 1,000.

Replying  to a query, Ravi said the government should take action against sugar mill owners belonging to whichever party for not paying the dues to sugarcane growers.

"BJP is not supporting any of its leaders who are owning the sugar mill and not clearing the dues of the farmers," he said.

JD(S) Deputy Leader YSV Dutta said his party was not joining the dharna as it believes in solving the problem through negotiations. "BJP is making efforts to gain political mileage out of the issue which is highly condemnable," he said.

In the Legislative Council too, BJP members trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans against Siddaramaiah and his government.

Opposition BJP Leader D V Sadananda Gowda said the government had failed to protect interests of the farmers by not conceding their demands.

Council Chairman D H Shankarmurthy adjourned the proceedings for 15 minutes amidst the din raised by opposition members.

Pastor Frank, I fully agree with your earlier comments.

I remember very well, it was you who spoke on your Christian magazine (publicly) about the downfall of Yeddy, when the attacks on churches took place under the nose of BJP.

While the pathetic condition of the roads are an eyesore, I only hoped that Mr.Prabhu should have taken the same zeal to fight with the BJP govt. that also gave us a useless CM, DVS from our own coastal Karnataka.

Mr.Prabhu, BJP, KJP, Bajrangi, Sene are now things of the past.

In other words they seem to me like a toothless tiger.... ha ha ha !!

    Dear BJP:

How can our CM takes the responsibility of the death of the farmer. He has to answer to God for his mistakes. Yeddi, Sadananda Gowda, and Shettar has no shame to participate in the Dharna. When BJP ruled Karnataka, it was corrupt, and hating minorities, destroying their properties etc., this is know to the world. Today we have the best CM in Karnataka and he is an experienced politician and he will not only complete his five years terms but he will continue. He will surely make Karnataka like Singapore. He has already done good developments in Karnataka. Corrupt people will never like him because he is crystal clean CM. Every one knows BJP is a trouble making party. Now see this Modi, his advertising and how much money he is spending and making him self a great leader. Its only on posters but inside he is a ravening wolf. Take it from me, he will never become the PM of India. Next it is only Rahul Gandhi and I say this million times. However I want the readers of Daiji, be careful about Modi and his black money, and make your decision to chose the right person.

It is appalling that somebody who is sitting miles away from the incident is casting aspersions on the character of the poor victim farmer without any proof or evidence. Least what the victim and his poor bereaved family now deserves is somebody calling him an idiot and a paid victim. This is truly shameful and downright insensitive. If you are angry at the politicians venting your anger on them but not the poor farmer and his family. I hope common sense prevails and you will apologize to your inner conscience for such a grave mishap.

What is new in BJP's stance. their motto:
"I was not not capable to do any good work, I will not allow you to do good work too!!!"

I hope, once and for all this party ceases to exist and a completely different party with different ideology, which is not involved in religion politics will come to the fore so that development of country goes unhindered.

Yeddy was not bothered about farmers when he was in power. When his earlier Dharna was not getting him anywhere, he got this god sent or man made opportunity to announce his new strategy "to fight for the farmers". Did he ever think of the farmers before that farmer's suicide?
Can he ever take up for the poor people? RSS\BJP\KJP did not have such agenda anytime and they will never help the poor or take care of their educational needs. They want them to remain illiterate so they can be manipulated by them in the name of religion.
If he has such a lot of money, let him start some industry for the farmers (who were in distress during BJP Govt.) where they can earn their livelihood when they are in difficult times. Just making speeches and visiting them once in a while will not help their stomach\needs.
