Udupi: St Peter's Church, Pethri emerge winners at 'Nathal Sobhann'

Udupi, Dec 2: St Peter's Church, Pethri emerged winners of the first edition of ‘SEVA Spirit Nathal Sobhann 2013’, an Udupi diocese-level inter-parish Christmas carol singing, dance and skit contest, organized by the ICYM unit of Holy Family Church, Brahmavar here on Sunday December 1.

Holy Family Church, Brahmavar won the second place and the third place was bagged by St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala. Holy Cross Church, Byndoor, St Paul Church, Barkur, and St Ann’s Church, Thottam won consolation prizes.

Prior to the event,  Fr Antony Vaz, parish priest, Holy Family Church, Brahmavar inaugurated the competition and wished all the participants good luck. Fr Edwin D’Souza, director of ICYM Udupi diocese, Fr Fredrick D’Souza, director of Kallianpur ICYM deanery, Ivan D'Silva, president of ICYM, Udupi diocese, Janet D’Souza, secretary, parish pastoral council, Princeton Pinto, president, and Rebecca Lewis, secretary of the unit were present.

Teams from Byndoor, Ajekar, Pangala, Udupi, Thottam, Kolalgiri, Brahmavar, Sastan, Barkur, Pethri and Pamboor participated in the event. More than 380 participants from 11 parishes of the diocese competed for the top spot.

Dr Baptist Menezes, vicar general of Udupi diocese presided over the valedictory function. Fr Antony Vaz, parish priest of Holy Family Church, Brahmavar, Fr Edwin D’Souza, director of ICYM Udupi Diocese, Fr Fredrick D’Souza, director of ICYM Kallianpur Deanery, Ivan Dsilva, president ICYM, Udupi diocese, Janet D’Souza, secretary parish pastoral council, Noel Lewis, Stephen Lewis and Celestine D’Almedia, animators of the unit, Princeton Pinto, president and Rebecca Lewis secretary of the unit, mega sponsors of the event from Seva Spirit Ravi Prakash Gonsaleves, Santhosh Barnes, Stephen Lewis, Joel D’Almedia, co – sponsor Richard Jyothi Raima Mendonca were present.

Pramod Madhwaraj, MLA of Udupi attended the programme. In his address he said, “The month of December marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations. We have to follow in the path of Jesus Christ. Apart from cultural events youth must take part in social activities and should also help the needy."

Dr Baptist Menezes distributed the first prize of Rs 11,111, a trophy and certificates to the team from St Peter’s Church, Pethri while Rs 7,777,  a trophy and certificates were awarded to the team from Holy Family Church, Brahmavar who came second. Rs 3,333, a trophy and certificates were presented to the team from St John the Evangelist Church, Pangala.

Rs 1,111, a trophy and certificates were given to the consolation prize winners. Participation certificates and mementos were given to all the churches for taking part in the event.

Joseph Pinto, Avil D'Cruz and Snehith Lobo were the judges of the competition. Daijiworld.com, Daijiworld Weekly, U Channel, 92.7 Big FM were the official media partners of the mega event.

Seva Spirit, Brahmavar was the mega sponsor, while Richard Jyothi Raima Mendonca and Khain Properties, Udupi were the co – sponsors.

Princeton Pinto welcomed the guests and the participants while Rebecca Lewis delivered the vote of thanks.

Stephen Lewis announced the names of the winners.
 
Ria Lewis, Prissel Pinto, Princeton D’Almeida and Royan D’Almeida compered the entire event.
