Czech footballer Ujfalusi retires

Prague, Dec 3 (IANS): Former Czech footballer Tomas Ujfalusi says he has decided to retire after persistent problems with his injured knee.

Ujfalusi injured his knee while playing for Galatasaray Istanbul in August. He is now a defender of Czech football club Sparta Praha, reports Xinhua.

"My knee was not in optimal condition after intensive training sessions. If I cannot be useful on the pitch, it makes no sense, although I naturally feel sorry that football is over," said Ujfalusi Monday.

The 35-year-old has played over 600 matches for Hamburg, Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid and Galatasaray Istanbul. He won the European League and the UEFA Super Cup in 2010 with Atletico Madrid and the Turkish Super League in 2012 and 2013 with Galatasaray Istanbul.

Ujfalusi played 78 times for the Czech Republic with which he won the bronze medal at the European Championships in 2004.
