Kundapur: College girl ends life after mother tells her to study

Kundapur, Dec 5: In a shocking and tragic incident, a college student allegedly committed suicide after her mother told her to study instead of watching TV.

Deepa Shetty (21), daughter of hotelier Prabhakar Shetty and Hema Shetty, residents of Anegalli, is the deceased. Deepa was a second year student of BCom of Richard Almeida Memorial College, Navunda.

It is said that Deepa was short tempered and used to get annoyed at her mother whenever she advised her. She used to close the door of her room and at times refuse to eat food for two or three days out of anger, neighbours said.

On Wednesday at around 5 pm, she was watching television with her elder sister's child on her lap. Her mother reportedly shouted at her and asked her to study for her upcoming exams. Deepa got annoyed and went to her room leaving the child there. She latched her room from the inside.

The mother ignored her as she had behaved in a similar manner in the past. However, after about half-an-hour she knocked at the door and asked her to open it. When there was no response, the family got worried. They then called the locals and when they looked through the window, they found her hanging from the ceiling fan.

Deepa was the youngest among the three children of Prabhakar Shetty and Hema, who belong to a middle class family from Anegalli. Their son is said to be mentally ill and is being looked after by the family. The elder daughter is teaching at a school in Arehole, and for her sake, they had taken up a house on rent at Navunda and were staying there for the last one-and-a-half years. Prabhakar Shetty is usually away on business.

Of course parents should guide the children but until what age. Legal adult age 18???. This is 21 years old might had some difficulties or normal age to complete bcom is 21. Everyone wants freedom so parents use the proper approach just don't say about your sacrifices. If you cannot afford or your child cannot able to cope up with their studies, just leave them. Degree is not the only requirement to lead a happy life. Do not pressurize the kids and use a friendly approach with loving tone. Caring and loving tone makes the wonders.

May her soul rest in peace. Again a very sad news in our place.

So, now a days parents can not tell anything to their children is it? If they are doing something wrong also parents should tolerate and keep quite else face like this is it?

God shows us the way how we can convince our modern, hi-tech, wireless, remote control children, so that we can only press the button our children will understand what they have to do!!!!!

Our children should be taught the Ten Commandments from the elementary school onwards.

Father and mother are always thinking of better future of their children.
I quote: Luke 11:11 If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Unquote.

The parents are advised for the better future of their children and the present children are short tempered, disgusted, wild and depressed.
Scolding of children only will not serve the purpose. At the same time love and care are also required.
Very sad death. My heartfelt condolences to the father, mother and the surviving children.

The young woman, 21 years old, committed suicide. It is always a shock for the family, relatives and friends to accept and to overcome such a tragedy.
It must have been a long process for the young woman till she decided to kill herself by hanging. At the age of 21 she must have suffered from serious mental problems and disorders for a long time.
I was touched to read this sad news. No one will ever know the reasons for this terrible tragedy.

RIP Deepa!!Today's children, especially during the teen years, are having minimal tolerance levels and mostly rebellious so the yesteryear technique of rebuking, insulting, compared with other children, nagging, forcing them to do something against their wishes does not work anymore more so if the child is stubborn, and will almost always lead to rious consequences!! The only technique is to take the child fully into confidence and shower the maximum love and motivate rather than use force!!

The change in behavior of children are due to many factors due to intense competition, , media, junk foods indirectly leading to hormonal changes leading to mental changes like impulsiveness/rebellion!!

Force does not work anymore, only love and security!!!

"Stubbornness is about clinging to a familiar way of thinking about and doing things" and a person being stubborn and short tempered qualities may be worse. Only tender love and understanding can yield some good result.

The step what she took is too extreme and one precious life perished. Very sad.

There is a very narrow line or thread or division between sane and insane.
Temporary insanity can take control you you ,me or anybody.
During this time timely trained counselors are required to defuse the situation.
This streak can be running in the family too.
    It's called temporary insanity.
Most of the time the true reason surfaces later.

RIP. This is too much shele. We should control our anger. Psychology, depression, controlling anger and other health related subjects should be taught as general knowledge. How to behave at home, how to take of our lives and life & death, suicide leads to hell - these all topics must be covered. A request to all - never commit suicide.

TV is not simply called the idiot box. A lot of people are so addicted to soaps and serials to such an extent that it has become something that looks like actually happening in their own lives. One of the worst addiction after smoking drugs and drinking. People don't realize the amount of negative affect serials have on their personal lives. People literally live the lives and characters they see on serials. I have seen people who speak about the characters just like it is happening around them in real. Sympathizing, empathizing, it is madness. It is up to the entire family to sit and think of repercussions due to living lives like they suffer from multiple personality disorder.

Parents must refrain from watching such serials in order to avoid their kids follow suit. Every single word we use, every action of ours, every discipline or indiscipline we follow are emulated by our children. And when we try to stop them, they get on the offensive and they start becoming rebellious, which leads to a lot of negative repercussions. We must understand that there are so much better knowledge a tv program can give. Look at animal planet, national geographic, discovery, channels that show us a lot of things which exist in reality, but we cannot see them in our lifetime. We are so privileged yet we don't make use of it. We tend to get addicted to stupidity and die of stupidity.

Very sad to hear. May her soul rest in peace.

It's better to appoint professional psychologists to guide the children along with their studies. Modern world children get everything they do not want to put efforts seek for easy and comfort way. Receive from parents what they want but not what they need. When they do not get they do these things kind of blackmail to the parents.

One more innocent life is gone. My heartfelt condolences to her parents, dear and near ones.

In Kundapur side this is a new trend now a days. Kundapur people in general are mentally very strong, self-content, hard working and helpful in nature. I am shocked to keep hearing this type of tragic news day by day.

My earnest request to all those parents to kindly understand the feelings, tensions, frustrations, problems of your children, as they won't tell their problems to outsiders. Take your children into confidence and lend your ears patiently to them.

Also, to all those think tankers...teachers... professors...local bodies...please arrange to have a seminar in each village at least once a month through your Panchayat Board wherein the guest speakers could educate the parents and children covering such social issues so as to strengthen the innocent people / children to take care of their precious lives. If there is a problem...definitely there is a solution....what is needed is self-confidence and a little bit of patience. God Bless All.

Such a stupid girl, for just a silly reason ended her life.

Common youngster, Take this world as challenging, live to fulfill your dreams and be passionate about what you are.

Now people dont say anything about her mother for pressurizing her to study. Indeed everyone passes through this stage, and all mothers want their children to get well educated.

    Anyways R.I.P.
