Mangalore, Dec 7: "It is really disgusting to see the ritual of 'Made Snana' being practised in the state of Basava, Kanaka, Buddha and Shishunala Sharif who preached equality, brotherhood and love among people. ‘Made Snana’ is a stain on the image of Karnataka. 'Purohithashahi' priests to quench their desire are suppressing the backward class people by making them roll over on plantain leaves of leftover meals, which is an insult to humankind and shame to Indian culture. Hence I severely condemn it," said Sri Basavaraja Devaru of Revana Siddeshwara Math, Dharwad.

He was addressing a day-long hunger strike organized by Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruta Vedike (R) against ‘Made Snana’, near DC's office here on Saturday December 7.

"Making backward class people roll on leftover meals doesn’t cure diseases; it symbolises the egoistic attitude of Brahmins. The people who roll on leftover meals are innocents who in the name of belief are suppressed and rendered helpless," he added.

He also said that those practising untouchabilty should be awarded capital punishment.

"The chief minister should intervene in this matter immediately and bring an ordnance to stop this inhuman act. The Kukke Subramanya temple incharge Nagaraju has been giving reckless statements about this issue, hence the chief minister should sack him immediately. Let all priests make their family members or themselves roll over leftover meals," he said.

Shivaramu, state president of Karnataka Rajya Hindulida Vargagala Jagruta Vedike said, "This is an inhuman practice being performed from several years. From past 4 years we have been strongly opposing this act; and once there was also an attack on me. It is a challenge to Indian society. This is suppressing the weaker class. We will not stop our revolution till the practice is banned. The government should intervene by bringing an ordinance. We will not stop our revolution till we get justice."

Sri Rachoti Shivacharya Swamiji of Bettadapura Mysore also expressed his views against Made Snana.

A K Bhandary, Jayanandha Devadiga, Muneer Katipalla, Ahmed Kandak, Yousif Bhaktiar, Vijay K, Shekar Beltangady, Monappa and others were present.

The hunger strike will be held till 5 pm.

Once lord krishna pretended to be having severe headache. Many doctors gave medications but it did not work. Then lord krishna said “ No physicians can cure me, Only if some devotees are ready to give the dust of their feet to apply on my forehead it can be cured” No one was ready to give the dust of their feet to Lord Krishna as they did not want to go to hell, His beloved wife objected to this idea. Then Lord krishna said if nobody is ready to give the dust, go to Vrindavan and ask the Gopis, they are my best devotees.Gopis on learning this they readily accepted to give the dust of their feet to Lord Krishna. They said we are ready to go to hell if this will give relief from headache to lord krishna.
It was Lord krishna’s choice whether he wish to apply dust of the feet of humble devotees or a Balm.
Whats going on between a devotee and his god is purely their choice we need not worry about it. Let devotees of Subramanya do what they wish to do for their god.

Made Snana is not a new ritual or religious custom in Subramanya..It was there before..it is there now..and it will be there tomorrow..Only recently, someone poked their nose here and made it public..and thanks to media who gave wide publicity to it...please just ignore it if you don't like it..I think, Mr Jossey commented very well.."keep the media away"..

In Muslim religion (Shia's) devotees beat their body with chain and injure themselves..it is a religious practice and belief..I don't know more about it (why do they do like it)..I had to change the channel after seeing some very dangerous act. No one has come forward to question it..So,keep away from controversial issue..

Yesterday out of 202 people who did made-snana, 60 where brahmins. I had been repeatedly told in past, that most of upper casts participate than malekudias. This is a clear cut count for these peoples queries.
Some of the photos published in Daijiworld in past itself clearly pointed this matter. If Devotees wish let them do, & why these people poke their nose unnecessarily into other people faith & belief ? No one here pushes or pressurize one to do, so why are these people beating drums.

This practice is followed over the period of centuries. The hunger strike could have been conducted by this Dharwad Swamiji's forefather swamiji itself. It seems most of the Swamiji's want to come in news like politicians.

A couple from Mandya, who took part in this said “Our son Nutan, 20, had developed abscess soon after his birth. The abscess increased over a period of time. After taking part in the ‘made snana’ ritual, it has been cured to some extent. We come to the temple every year to take part in the ritual"

So it is people belief. It can't be stopped.

It is disgusting, but what to do. I am against it. But we cannot go against peoples' beliefs. When people get educated, these things will slowly disappear.

Cure for any disease should come from your mind though you take the right medicine. That is what doctors say. When these people believe that their skin diseases can be cured by this method, no skin specialist can cure it.

If Priests family members have skin diseases and if they believe Made Snana can cure them, definitely they will roll over. This swaamiji can not force them to do so.

Read today's newspaper. All caste people performed this task including Brahmins, yesterday. And looking at those photos of Made snana I can tell that most of them are non-dalits. People from neighboring districts, remote districts were also present yesterday.
