Mangalore airport: 2 kg gold, 9,000 USD, Rs 1.5 lac cash seized

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore

Mangalore, Dec 9: In yet another case of its kind, four persons were caught at Mangalore International Airport here on Sunday December 8 for trying to smuggle in two kg of gold worth Rs 50 lac.

The accused have been identified as passengers Umar Farooq (29) and Syed Pakayar Madam (25), both residents of Tekkila, Kasargod. Along with them, Abdul Nisar (31) and K Mohammed Kunhi, both residents of Chattanchal, Kasargod, who had come to receive the two passengers, were also caught while they were waiting near the entrance.

Farooq and Syed arrived from Dubai by Air India Express flight on December 8.

During checking, two gold bars weighing kilo each were found in the trouser pockets of the two passengers. A cash bag containing 9,000 American dollars and Rs 1.5 lac in cash was also seized, official sources said.

Investigation revealed that Nisar and Kunhi had come to the airport to receive the gold and cash from the passenger duo.

The arrests were made by the officials of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI). The accused were later produced in court.

@JNB, you mean to say that mattress did not pass through the x-ray?. If they have passed the mattress through x-ray machine, certainly they would have found the glittering wire.

Catching these small consignments... is an eyewash, I am sure number of big consignments already passed thru with the help of same custom officers. People travel to Mangalore know how greedy is our custom officers are.
This is setup between smugglers and customs officers. They will allow number of big consignments and in between to show off they will catch one or two and do the press meet.
The person who caught with gold you can find him in Kasaragod driving a luxury car in a day or two. Influential people behind their back... they will get them out. Sometimes the person who is travelling with gold/saffron they know he is getting caught.

We criticize small offenders like the above...I am not supporting anyway...However, it has become illegal to carry gold since last few months....which made the gold price exorbitant and common citizens are the losers.. but we are tolerant towards politicians, day looters, bribes, scams like Mining,2G,Commonwealth etc etc..and can't imagine the scale of loss... still no combined voice..

I don't know what to write of such people. Human beings of such caliber have become monkey's. The favourite fruit for a monkey is plantain. You give it 2 it will eat well but we give 10 it will eat 2 and make a mess of the rest. In the same way a human being who earns his first income of Rs. 1000 or 10,000 will know the value of that income. When that income becomes 10 times more after a some years then we start behaving like monkeys not knowing how to use that extra money. Monkeys are never greedy but we have become so greedy that we will stoop to any level even carrying them in our underwear or panties or mixing with coffee or they might use it as a suppository capsule.

This reminds me one old incident in them Bombay customs.
One person carrying a big mattress tiedup and roled by a white cotton rope.Metal detector was beefing saying there is a meal and customs officials check and finally split open the mattress, still they failed find metal and finally asked the person give them a clue how he hid the metal? so that we can free you.
He told metal is not in the mattress but a thin gold wire ed in a fat rope. Left scot free for giving a free idea to customs.

Well Done Mangalore Customs Officials. Great Job.!!!
My concern is that our city- Mangalore is in news for the wrong reasons these days & not because of any local people, but because of a neighboring state. This is unfortunate.!!
Officials, please publish the punishment given to these law offenders, so that others learn a lesson before committing this kind of crimes.!!

I think people from our neighboring State never believe in making any legal business. We can imagine even after having four International Airports in Kerala yet lot of them still prefer Mangalore Airport!!! Since almost all Indian New International Airports got latest scanning machines, if Customs Personnel wants they can catch anything. If you believe Dubai Police Statement, few thieves in UAE got gold detecting machine tool which was disclosed to my colleague who went to one of the Dubai Police Station to lodge a complaint of theft in his flat

It's not lack of common sense... The truth is that such activities are caught only when the customs receive a tip off... as far as I have heard 1 in 10 smuggling attempts only is foiled by the customs in Mangalore. so people are willing to take the risk. each KG of gold successfully smuggled gets you over 5 lakh ruppees in profit.
