Kundapur: Protestors block highway over inferior quality of repair work

Kundapur, Dec 11: Local commuters and leaders on Tuesday December 10 blocked traffic on NH 66 in protest against the inferior quality of repair work on the stretch of road from Kundapur to Shiroor.  The national highway authority officials and contractors who saw the protest getting intensified set the tarring work in motion.

MP Jayaprakash Hegde had on October 9 said that the repair work on NH 66 would start within fifteen days, and that an amount of Rs 84 lac was released for the purpose.

The Panaji-Mangalore national highway stretches between 247.50 kilometers to 249 kilometers in Shiroor, 258 to 275 km in Byndoor and 281 to 283 km in Kundapur were completely damaged and repair work was required.  Unfortunately the highway authority which called for tenders got inferior quality patchwork done on them, thus evoking people's anger.

The highway department and the contractors who started the repair work from Shastri park in Kundapur during November should have filled the large pot holes with gravel and cement as per rules.  However, the local say that they mixed only gravel and crusher powder for the purpose and by pouring water on it every day they tried to cheat the people.

The protest lasted for nearly one and half hours blocking the traffic for a distance of several kilometers. The police who realized the gravity of protest arrived at the spot.  DySP C B Patil and circle inspector P M Diwaker requested the protesters to let the traffic move but the protesters demanded that the work should start immediately.  The police who asked for half an hour’s time, called the highway authority officials and contractors and persuaded them to start the work.  The protesters dispersed when the tarring work got started.
.
The protests were led by town municipal council member Rajesh Kaveri, Sridhar Sheregar and Sachidanand.  Johnson Almeida, president of Lorry owners association, Chandra S Naik, president of garage owners association; office bearers of garage owners association, owners of shops, Rajesh Kadgimane, Ravindra Chickensal and hundreds of people participated in the protest.

Well done protestors. Recently when I was travelling by sleeper coach in bus to Mumbai, every passenger was swinging left to right as the bus was moving on these roads. Hope my next trip will be a pleasant one!

Mr. Oscar Fernandes also should take a ride in the sleeper couch in this root. All Congress supports also should note the pathetic condition of this road.

Well done Protestors. In India nothing can be achieved without protests. What happened to the promise given by JP Hegde two months ago.Probably contractors & politicians received RS.84 Lakhs. But they got the work done with RS.8,400/-only just filling some mud & sand on the Craters.Remaining money must have gone into their pockets. For the last 66 years these Contractors & Politicians were looting the money meant for road development taking advantage of our ignorance, silence & Tolerance. We cannot tolerate any more to continue like this.We should not bow down on their empty promises.U protesting people did a marvelous job by not stopping your protest until the Contractor
started immediate work.A few days ago it was reported in DW that Mr. Oscar has sanctioned RS.4 Crores for fixing temporary Shiradi Ghat repair work & another RS.100 crores for repair of other roads in Karnataka. What happened to that sanctioned funds.Whether the funds have been released & the work has been started.I am also aware that Shiradi Ghat repair work has not yet been started. It shows the irresponsibility on the part of of Roads,Transport & Highway Authorities.Hence I strongly believe that we very badly need a change of Government in the centre after 2014 Lok Sabha elections. We need some party which can look after the interest of middle class people of this Country.

Driving through this stretch of road was a nightmare for smaller vehicles. Thanks for the timely action taken by the Aam Admi's.

    Right measure taken by public.

Nowadays the media and people's voice are playing major role in the society. Powerful than the administration.
