After 4 years, road widening work to resume in Karkala

Karkala, Dec 12: Dr M T Reju, Udupi deputy commissioner on Thursday December 12 restarted the process of road widening work in Karkala all over again. The project was put on hold for the last four years.  He personally met the owners of properties on alongside the road and sought their cooperation to make Karkala a model town.  He was engaged in this work from Salmer to Anantashayana in the morning.

The district administration had agreed to widen the road when the people concerned consented to vacate seven feet of land on either side of the road on their own four years ago. However, the work did not materialize.

Some builders have built large buildings beside the road, reportedly against town municipality regulations. The buildings are constructed leaving only three or four feet for the road instead of the promised seven feet.  As the administration took no action against them, others also backed down from their promise, thus causing the delay.

It is learnt that there's a builders' lobby that wants the administration to make only poor people vacate their land for the road.  The municipality has reportedly not made such demands from prominent people in the area, it is said.  The concerned locals have explained to the deputy commissioner that this was one of the reasons for their refusal to leave their land.

Deputy commissioner Dr M T Reju said that only 80% of the people have given up land on their own and the remaining 20% are being persuaded to leave.  Some of them have objected to it.  A separate committee has been made to convince them and the project will be completed before the next monsoons, he said.

Town municipal council president Rehmat, vice-president Shashikala Rane, tahsildar Babu Devadiga, second grade tahsildar Manikya, town chief executive officer Mabel D’ Souza, ASP Annamalai, SI Pramod, former president N R Subheet, opposition leader Prakash Rao, committee president Winnibold Mendonca, councilor and others were present.

As i am a resident of karkala,as much as i know the road widening work had started when Mr.Sunil Kumar was in a position. And later on when he lost in the election may be because of this, the work had been stopped,Now again he is trying to make some improvement in the town.

My friends, Our DC say that Some builders have built large buildings beside the road, reportedly against town municipality regulations. The buildings are constructed leaving only three or four feet. I would like to request Mr. DC, what the Govt rule says, how many feet should be left while constructing a house. I hope at least 6 feet should be left, but it is not followed why Sir. ? I have seen a house constructed on a 5 cents land on road side. If you measure from the road the distance is only 3 feets and the Gram Panchayat did not give permission to construct but the Tahsil has given permission because of influence or anything. Why ?? Sir you can visit Pilar Village and justify it. Only influence and money plays major role in present days..

    Dear Friends,

You have read after 4 years, road widening work to resume in Karkala and DC of Udipi has promised it. As a resident I would like to bring to your notice that what happened for Kundapur - Mangalore 4 Lane widening ? For Karkala it is four years and for NH 66 it is 8 years. Still bridges are not complete. Katapadi town and Padubidri work not even started. Political pressure plays the major role here. At Padubidri they want a by pass, Why ??????? Some builders have built buildings beside the road and even on the Govt land.

There is clear instructions from the Govt that 6 feet should be left while construction in their personal land. Is it followed ? No and never by rich persons. The problems and difficulties faced by the commuters since 2005 on udipi - Mangalore only can say about this. As a resident of udipi, I would like to request DC Udipi to look in this matter and there should not be by pass at Padubidri..

Mr. Rakesh, India is not shining because of BJP, Congress or any other party. India has been taken 50 years back because of these political parties. Ruling party takes its five years time only for investigating previous ruling parties demerits or mistakes, their internal problems. There is no time for their people. They make promise but it is only in news.

I still doubt whether the people concerned who had then consented to vacate seven feet of land on either side of the road, will ever vacate. Karkala will remain the same old Karkala unless these persons vacate. Take the case of Moodubidri. Because of people's co-operation Moodubidri has superseded Karakala, but Karkala remained the same old Karkala.

Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar had met CM last week regarding this. This is the result of that.

Former MLA Bhadary should learn from him.
