Bangalore: No ban on arecanut, growers' interests will be protected: J P Hegde

From Our Special Correspondent
Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore

Bangalore, Dec 15: Allaying the fears of the arecanut growers in coastal Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada districts as well as in the malnad districts of Chikmagalur and Shimoga regarding the Centre’s reported decision to ban arecanut, Congress MP Jayaprakash Hegde on Sunday clarified that Centre has not banned arecanut and appealed to growers not to be misled by unfounded reports.

On the contrary, the Congress leader said the Centre was taking all steps have taken to protect the interests of the growers.

Speaking at an interaction programme organised by the Malenadu Mithra Vrinda in Bangalore on Sunday, the Congress MP from Udupi-Chikmaglur said the Centre has not used word "ban."

Hegde said he checked with Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad, who had informed him that there was no proposal before his ministry to ban arecanut.

However, he said all reports in India indicated absence of carcinogenic in arecanut and therefore no was no need for banning arecanut that was grown in parts of Karnataka.

He clarified that the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) of the World Health Organisation had in a 2008 monograph stated that "arecanut is carcinogenic to humans."

There is "sufficient evidence" of the carcinogenicity of betel quid (paan) with and without added tobacco, the WHO said.

On September 6, 2013, Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Director Amal Pusp had written a letter to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India to examine the scientific evidences on the harmful effects of arecanut with a view to initiating necessary action to classify the nut as an injurious substance.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Director, in his letter, had asked for examining prohibition of the use of arecanut as an ingredient in any food product, in conformity with the objectives of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption if it was scientifically established that it contained harmful effects.

Hegde said he would discuss with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India Director Sandhya Kabra and provide all details about the absence of harmful effects in arecanut.

Arecanut as such was not harmful, the Congress leader said and pointed out that products mixed with arecanut could be harmful to health.

Senior Congress leader B L Shanker said the agriculture is a state subject and the Centre has no power to ban arecanut.
Shankar contended that neither the Centre nor the State banned arecanut.

Prof T N Prakash of University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, said "arecanut is a food item.”

Tracing the history of the crop, he said the WHO has cooked up the report.

"It is a bogus report," Prof Shankar said arguing that vested interests were behind banning arecanut and thereby harm the large number of arecanut growers.

JD(S) MLA and Deputy Leader in the State Assembly Y S V Datta, who also attended the interaction, also opposed any proposal to ban arecanut.

Arecanut is one among the "Mangala Dravyas" used in daily Pujas and other rituals from time immemorial.

It is also eaten for digestion after sumptuous meals in marriage and other functions.

Its utility for good health has been recorded in Ayurveda and other Indian texts.

Govt. decisions nowadays are not taken by elected representatives, but are influenced by some hidden hands.

Our sacred cows are daily slaughtered for meat.

Now we are hearing another painful news about our sacred Areca.

I am sure all this will change for good after the coming elections.

In India only Gujarat has prohibition.Politicians are not at all interested in banning liquor though these people sing Gandhiji's values once in a year, who advocated total prohibition.Liquor is biggest curse for humanity.Even AAP may not interested in banning liquor as they have started tasting "chanda money".After all money matters!

Mr.J.P.Hegde is a very practical person. He has broken the frontiers of constituencies and helping the society.I see him not so active after VS election especially Madwaraj elected in Udupi.I noted his important statement recently in one of the newspaper. He said "politics is not a field for good persons" tells lot about direct politics.
He should come out from present party and join Modi's band wagon to help the people.society greatly needs persons like JP as MP.

ಅವರು 2009ರ MP election(ಮೊದಲ mp election ನಲ್ಲಿ ಸೋತರೂ ಕೂಡ) ನಿಂದ ಇತ್ತೀಚಿಗೆ ನಿರಂತರವಾಗಿ ಜನರ ಸಂಪರ್ಕದಲ್ಲಿದ್ದಾರೆ. I will not agree that "He is not active" after state election". He has acted positively when this Arecanut issue came in all medias. In fact he is the first MP of our state who visited HEALTH dept officials in Delhi and organized a meeting with Scientists of Karnataka agriculture university. He has attended to all national highway expansion issues and solved most of them. Due to his personal interest, the NH expansion works has become fast from last one month

when more harmful & spurious Tobacco & Liquor are not banned ,
    why Arecanut ?
Just because lesser scope for bribe with arecanut and govt wants the consumers to switch over to high revenue & funds generating liquor and tobacco !!!

Arecanut has Carcinogenic (Cancer causing substance)to humans, WHO says
But Arecanut has been used in our region for generations.
That way Liguor, Tobacco etc. even Milk also in excess is harmful to humans.
If proven harmful, Govt can classify the nut as an injurious substance. But banning may cause more harm, therefore it is also necessary to protect the Growers!

Hello JP you are speaking after a long long time. Keep it up. Your MP seat from UDUPI-Chikamagalur is finalized by Cong yesterday only. But this time it is going to be very tough for you as you could not do anything worthwhile for the Constituency.

This corrupt govt is doing some kind of testing by passing some statement. They want to know what is the response of the people. If people protest they withdraw their statement.

If ADIKE is harmful and has to be banned for this reason, let them first ban LIQUOR and CIGAR which are more harmful for health.

This govt is totally ULTA-PALTA. It is better to call this govt as ULTA PALTA ALLIANCE. This MP has become dumb on his govt.
