Beltangady: Mahalingeshwara Temple Theft – Accused Caught
Beltangady: Following a complaint on Monday April 24 about a theft of six alms boxes of cash and a 18gm gold chain at Venoor Shri Mahalingeshwara Temple, the Venoor police on Tuesday April 25 were successful in catching the thief and solving the case.
The complaint disclosed that the keys of the safe were with the temple priest Suryanarayana Bhat and therefore he was the prime suspect. After investigation, it was learnt from locals that the priest was spotted near the temple on Saturday April 22 at around midnight. A man-hunt followed and the suspect was finally caught at the Kundadabettu bus stop on Wednesday April 25.
On thorough questioning he confessed that he had committed the theft and revealed that after emptying the alms boxes, he disposed them in a nearby well. The empty boxes were promptly retrieved and cash amounting to Rs 19,253/- in coins and Rs. 3676/- in notes and a gold chain worth Rs. 16,000/- were found in a gunny bag in the gents’ toilet.
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
‘Pisudwani’ by Isaac D’Souza to be Released on April 30
Mangalore: Pisudwani, a collection of limericks and poems in Kannada by noted playwright Isaac D’Souza, also known as Yashwant D S will be released on Sunday April 30 at Muthappa Gudi premises here.
Sandesha director Fr Dennis D’Sa will release the book and Kannada Sahitya Parishat Dakshina Kannada district president Pradeep Kumar Kalkura will preside. The book will be introduced by Ira Nemu Poojary, principal, Hebri Ratnakarvarni Vidyapeeta. Cashew development authority former president Kallige Taranath Shetty, advocate M R Ballal, national-level swimmer Gopal Kharvi and Konkani Writer’s Okoota president Dolphy Casia are expected to take part in the event.
Beedi Workers’ Protection Forum Demands Pending Payment
Mangalore: The state government must make public a report on the plight of beedi workers in the state by the Institute for Social and Economic Change, said Hemavati P., chief convener of Beedi Workers’ Protection Forum while speaking to reporters here on Wednesday April 26.
Urging the government to call a meeting of all stakeholders including workers’ unions, beedin company owners, contractors, voluntary organizations and people’s representatives, she demanded that the government must pay the dearness allowance to beedi workers which has been pending for the past 15 months. The workers must be paid a minimum dearness allowance of Rs 62 for every 1000 beedies rolled, she said.
Further she stated that the Central Labour Welfare Board grants an annual sum of Rs 10 crore to the state government to implement various welfare schemes for the beedi workers. This amount is not enough and should be increased to Rs 40 crore so as to provide better facilities and scholarships to the children of beedi workers.
Out of 4 lakh beedi workers in the district, only 2.33 lakh have received identity cards. If the authorities fail to meet their demands, the beedi workers may go on strike, she added.
